Trying to buy a vehicle

We had an appointment at one of the dealerships in Lansing to look at a vehicle to replace Mrs ERJ's minivan.

It was raining. The traffic was all balled up due to construction. It took us +45 minutes to drill our way into Lansing.

The salesman was freaking clueless. "What kind of car are you looking for?"

Mrs ERJ reminded him that HE had set up the appointment to look at a specific vehicle.

"Nope. Can't do that yet. I gotta collect all of this personal information and enter it into the computer first before we can look at the vehicle."

He made zero eye-contact as he serviced the computer rather than the paying customers (us).

Ten minutes later...he looked up the vehicle on his computer. "Oh, that vehicle is not available. It is somewhere between safety inspection and detailing."

Mrs ERJ was incredulous. She could not grasp that this guy had scheduled an appointment and didn't have the vehicle "in-hand".

I stood up and said "Good-by!"

Two people (Mrs ERJ and I) lost two hours of our lives and put 50 miles on the minivan for no reason at all.

Southern Belle informed us that this is the new-normal.

  1. exactly. "Was gonna buy yer vehicle. But now I won't never buy one from this dealer 'cause you employ assholes and idiots"
What are you looking for? I bet we can find a better one than the one you didn't just buy.....

  2. ERJ: drop me an E-mail off your comment board, if you like. I have a place in mind that is not in the idiocy business, teats me honestly, and has sold me my vehicles starting in 2007. They have had all my service business in that time.

  3. I figure my professional billing rate is $125 per hour.

Why should I give them the benefit of that for free?

They are the way they are for reasons. If they are not asking and not paying then they are not going to change.

Totally by accident, I was standing by the office manager's desk waiting for Mrs ERJ to let go of the slacker's ear. Her desk was strategically placed near the main door in-and-out of the showroom.

Waiting for Mrs ERJ, I said "Don't let his incompetence ruin our weekend" as she was walking toward me, 12.5 minutes after we entered the dealership intending to purchase a vehicle.

I don't know or care if she heard the comment.

There are lots of car dealership in our area.

  4. Dad did that with a Honda dealer. They wanted to play games and he didn't. He went across the street to the Toyota dealer and bought a Camry. Drove it back across the street to show off his new car at the Honda dealer.

  5. Bill the assclown for time and mileage. And then SUE him for it. Odds are good you would prevail in small claims court if you have any evidence showing you had made an appointment and he couldn't fulfill his end of the bargain.

  6. Call me a cynic if you like, everybody else does, but ... why do I suspect the crucial information was that the office manager had 'her' desk placed just so?

People don't go into direct sales to mess customers around, whereas people 'do' go into office management because they love them some petty rules (and especially the power of lording it over mere employees, enforcing them).

Maybe he was not making eye-contact out of sheer embarrassment at 'having to' treat you so, because let's be honest, if 'she' didn't know what was going on, she'd be incompetent so ... it's more likely 'she' not only knew, but demanded he do it.

Just a thought (from somebody who daily gets forced to treat patients as blithering idiots and potential criminals/liars because ... "the rules" say I must. It's why I, and colleagues, love doing night-shifts, no managers about means we can 'fluff' [it's amazing how the night-shift admission forms have all the tick-boxes pre-completed, lol] the idiocy and just ... do the job).

    1. I think one of the functions of the office manager is to "deal" the customers to salespeople in an even manner much like a restaurant hostess spreads out incoming customers so no one waitress gets over-loaded or left without tips at the end of the night.

That was my read on the OM's desk position.

  7. I work an online job from home and earn 185 dollars per hour. I never imagined I could do it, but my best friend, who makes $15,000 a month at the job, encouraged me to find out more about it. This has limitless possibilities.

  9. I recently started truck shopping. I went to the lot and there were 4-5 young - middle-aged salesmen standing around outside, drinking coffee and kibbitzing. None of them made eye contact or showed any interest as I moved through the parked vehicles on the lot, looking at them. Finally I confronted one, told him what I was doing. First thing he wanted was to make a copy of my driver's license. I told him 'no' (I think this was to run a stealth credit check) - this was not appropriate until and if we reached test drive stage.

Then I proceeded to catch him in lie after lie. I had done my homework on trucks of interest before coming. After a few minutes of this, I gave up on him, let him go and looked up a manager that would be in a position to deal, because this kid was clueless and clearly not going to be trusted with anything.

Find an online forum that is focused on your particular vehicle and you might just find a regional dealership that works off volume rather than maximum profit-taking / customer. You will probably get a much better deal and less hassle.

  11. Outstanding work, Mike. I applaud your efforts since I currently make more than $36,000 every month from just one straightforward web business. Even though these are the most fundamental internet operations tasks, you may start bs-06 making a respectable online income with as little as $29,000.
