Tomato plant images for the archive

I thought the pictures showing the week-to-week progression of the tomato plants from new seedlings to planted-in-the-garden was useful.

I think it will be of value to continue the W-2-W format, if only to have green pictures to look at in the winter.

Orange Icicle

Stupice

I subscribe to the "fast start" school of plant growing.

The more quickly I can get a plant to fill its allotted space the better. The plant drives its roots down quickly and can start mining the native fertility of the soil. The canopy captures sunlight and helps surpress weeds. More food in total. More quickly.

The way to do that is to put some fertilizer in the water used to 'water in the plants' and then as you water the first couple of weeks. I use conventional fertilizers but there are all kinds of organic alternatives including tea fermented with manure or local vegetation (nettles or hay being a common choices).

The dead, grassy looking vegetation you see in the pictures is from the rye cover crop.

  1. Dirt looks good!
After 4 years, my pasture garden is still heavy with clay. Close to 50 tons of horse manure has barely touched it. Need a bigger dump truck! It did put out a bumper crop of romas last year however.
I have a smaller fenced in spot I've been amending for about 6 years... I think we are finally at the point I can cover crop and broadfork it... shovel goes in easy with barely any foot pressure, lift and turn is easy (down to the depth of the shovel... about 9 inches?)

  2. I plant my potato crop next to drip tape. It only takes a couple feet of head pressure so it runs fine out of the trailer we haul water with. Just before I hill them I dump lots of water through the tape, then pull it and hill the potatoes. Works good for me here in Copper Basin Alaska where June and early July tend to be droughty. This year we had so much snow that I still have snow piles and standing water on much of the garden so we’ll see!

  4. Outstanding work, Mike. I applaud your efforts since I currently make more than $36,000 every month from just one straightforward web business. Even though these are the most fundamental internet operations tasks, you may start bs-06 making a respectable online income with as little as $29,000.
