The Rule of Threes

  • Three seconds of stupid can get you killed.
  • Three minutes of severe bleeding or loss of oxygen will get you killed.
  • Three hours of severe heat loss will get you killed.
  • Three days of dehydration can get you killed.
  • Three weeks without food can get you killed.

Disclosure: I bought a couple of sleeping bags this month. Not because I plan to go camping but because a decent sleeping bag makes a fabulous, inexpensive comforter.

I am still struggling with avoiding the three seconds of stupid.

  1. You can have contingency plans for the last four; but that first one...is lurking in the shadows just waiting for you.

    1. Remus over at The Woodpile Report advises "Stay away from crowds." That goes a long way toward avoiding "stupid".

Sometimes a single person can be a crowd. Young men in particular seem to have a need to prove their (our) stupidity and it is often for the benefit of a single person.

Other than that, being in a hurry increases the risk of stupidity. The famous advice is, "If you don't have time to do it right, you don't have time to do it."

Thanks for reading and thanks for commenting.

  3. I've been a victim of my own 3 seconds of stupid a couple of times, fortunately not in the last 25-30 years. Avoid the three seconds from others is to be vigilant and on guard at all times. Knowing your surroundings goes a long ways towards that. Unfortunately, it can still rear its ugly head once in a while though no fault of your own.
