I don't know if I have any readers in South Florida, but if I do, I could use some guidance.
The ever wise and lovely Mrs ERJ informed me that we will be visiting Southern Belle in South Miami sometime this fall/winter.
I COULD go wearing a sweat-stained baseball cap, baggy, camo, cargo shorts (with neatly sewn rips and patches), sagging tee-shirts and old running shoes and mismatched crew-socks, but that would mark me as a hick, a Yankee or a street-person.
That violates my preference to be "gray".
Can anybody give me guidance of what respectable men in their fifties and sixties wear for after-work casual in Dade county?
- Hats?
- Shirts? (colors, patterns)
- Slacks/shorts? How long? How tight? Colors? Cargos OK?
- Footware? Sandals? Running shoes? Sock length?
- Facial hair?
I want to look like the guy who has partial ownership in a tobacco store or the very successful used car salesman while he entertains a few friends after work.
Links to images will be much appreciated. Or, links to videos of family reunions/after-work party kinds of events.
The photo in post is mislabeled, should read:

That picture illustrates how we judge "tribe" affiliation based on the uniform a person is wearing.
DeleteWearing the wrong uniform in the wrong place is to volunteer to be victim.
This could be interesting. Gonna carry? How much of your pockets are regularly filled and what is your minimum daily carry. Approximate volume by 'pocket space'.
ReplyDeleteI am not planning on carrying while down there.
DeleteIn south FL? Please reconsider.
DeleteKhakis and polo shirts.
ReplyDelete^^what he said.^^

Color choices for the southern alpha male are more 'peacock-ish' than my preference, perfectly normal to see pink, powder blue, yellow, or other bright hues.
Recommend you reconsider carry decision.
ReplyDeleteAs a former Boy Scout, I take the motto seriously.
As a guy that cares, recommend exercising everything you are comfortable with.
DeleteAnd then, just like Emeril, kick it up a few notches.
Other option is a polo shirt with a golf course logo...
ReplyDeleteYep...and I'd also reconsider not carrying. Any time I go to Florida, I carry. They have "stand your ground" law down there and you are not required to retreat if someone decides they want to take what you have.
DeleteJust keep in mind that the cops down there only want to hear one side of the story, IYKWIM.
Do the research to KNOW all the rules. Bring the right tools and exercise. Peace.
DeleteCentral FL, near where they shoot rockets...Mid-60's. I second khaki's and golf shirts, but also many wear shorts,I do wear cargos sometimes, and any shirt with a collar. Light colors for obvious reasons. I ALWAYS wear a hat (ball cap) but never indoors. I wear sneakers with ankle socks mostly. I wear a short beard, YMMV. As for carry, as long as your permit is reciprocal I would also consider it. Parts of south FL aren't culturally the USA. I did not stay at the Holiday Inn Express last night...
ReplyDeleteOK, I think I have a handle on the golf look.

Shorts are in this time of year
ReplyDeleteMost of Miami, particularly anything with about 10 miles of MIA, is best considered as being the northernmost big city in South America.
ReplyDeleteThis might be a better golf look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jykq0wrIksk
DeleteGo back and watch Miami Vice. You could model your dress on either Crockett or Tubbs. Mint green t-shirt, white sport coat and pants with dark sunglasses. Don't shave too close, and rent a white Ferrari. You and Mrs. ERJ will own the town !
ReplyDeleteDress just like Ricky Ricardo from I Love Lucy. I hear that's all the rage.

ReplyDeleteTwo hi cap 1911s and lots of mags
Go on the computer and look for "live street cameras" in the cities and towns you are going to visit. For example, I checked out Jackson Hole, Wyoming before going, to see how the people looked and behaved at times I would be out and about.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it doesn't hurt to mosey in to the local police precinct and ask about which locations to avoid- just take it with a grain of salt. What some folk think is perfectly fine, may not be when the locals hear your accent, twang, whatever, and decide you are easy pickings because, "Yew ain't from 'round here, air yew?"
I have one suggestion related to the carry or not carry...
ReplyDeletein Florida we have one excellent resource re understanding gun laws that doesn't exist in many other states. That's Jon Gutmacher's "Florida Firearms Law- Useage and Ownership" now in its 9th edition.
floridafirearmslaw.com
It's $35 or so book (online or in most gunstores) and is written by an attorney who's also an NRA certified instructor. I like that the book tells you what the law is and then explains in plain English what that means, and how the Florida and US courts have interpreted it.
My impression is that frequently the law DOESN'T mean what you or I would think it means after reading the statute, and there's lots of other important info to.
This book is used by a number of Florida police academies to teach police recruits the law.
I don't have any connection to the book or the author other than having bought a couple of editions of the book, and recommending it to other people. (For someone buying their first gun or who is beginning to contemplate protecting themself, I think this book is the most important $35 they'll spend to stay out of trouble)
The book is probably overkill for the purposes of you coming to visit for a few days or for a week, but it's appropriate for the topic of carrying or not carrying etc, and it is the bees knees if you are thinking about that subject in Florida.
