Adventures in Plumbing

I think I solved the mystery of the leaky toilet.

Tank bolts
The original installation (2009) came with steel, i.e. magnetic, tank bolts.

Eight years of anaerobic, carbonate-rich water dissolved the heads of the bolts.

The rubber washers had no compression around a portion of their perimeter.

Viola!  A water leak.

The replacement bolts are non-magnetic and look like brass.  I expect them to last decades.

The bottom of the tank has a hairline crack in it but I think we have enough dissolved minerals in our water that it will seal up as long as we don't put things in the tank to minimize rust stains.
