I think this team did it by adding a lot of reverb (electronically) to the recording.
At the time, mid 70's, Karen Carpenter was considered the best female singer in the world, according to Elton John, Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Plus she was a terrific drummer as well as playing the bass and guitar. I think she had perfect pitch also.

Thankfully there is an electronic contribution to that. Otherwise the streets would be littered with broken hearts. It is just beautiful. Roger
