Self-correcting problems

I pulled into the driveway where Kubtoa lives at 5:50 AM. I called him. Then I sent a text.

The MUST LEAVE by time was 6:00 AM. I set my alarm for 6:01 AM.

When it went off, I turned off my phone and drove home.

I have no idea what is going on in Kubota's head. It would be speculation on my part to supply reasons.

  1. Living and (hopefully) learning. A graduate degree from the School of Hard Knocks can take a long time.

  3. This will save me a lot of time. I’m glad Tudor won the primary next week.

  5. Good job ERJ. Eventually he’ll figure it out. They say boys’ brains don’t finish developing until after 25......

  6. I took my aforementioned grandson out to the barn for a crash course in welding so he could possibly get hired at one of Warren Buffets companies locally the Union Tank Company. He passed the test and got hired starting at $24.80 an hour with benefits out the yazoo . He got "tired" of that job and quit after 6 months . Welding is too hard , heh . He now is trying to pass himself off to poor old retired people as a carpenter . I see a fraud charge coming down the track . Sigh .

  7. Back in the days of wearing the sheriff's hat I'd hear on a regular basis, 'wahh, you're ruining my life!' I'd always reply every decision you ever made or avoided brought you here to this place and time. That's including the decision why we're having this conversation right now, with accompanying paperwork. Young mules gotta hit their heads against the barn doors several times before they figure it out. Some more than others...

  8. Sell the Kubota and buy an Allis-Chalmers. They're larger, get more work done in a day and there is a greater variety of implements for them. You'll lose money on the Kubota, they're not worth much even when not old and worn out, but better to take the loss now and move on before it breaks down completely and is way too expensive to repair. I've had a couple Kubotas and learned to have them thoroughly repaired as early as possible through one of the U.S. government-operated repair programs. Of the 5 government-run programs only one is really worth it but it's slow - 3 years.

    1. In bygone days that was good advice. In today's woke-infested crapfest that passes for a military, maybe not so much.

    2. Without even getting into the "woke" stuff, when I was in the Air Force, once you got past "basic" you were expected to keep your own clothes clean, get up and get to work on your own, feed yourself. All those adult functions that too many young folks are looking to mom or dad to fulfill.

  10. Check with the nearby police departments to see if they know where he is.

  11. Speaking personally (I was complete shit/waste of space as a teenager, I’m surprised my parents didn’t ‘euthanise’ me) being ‘kicked out’ at 17 and told “sink or swim” was the (eventual) making of me (and yes, a stint … Oh OK decades, in the military made a difference, but I wouldn’t have even considered it if I’d had the option … meaning excuse not to).

Whilst the whole “son leaves home and gets a good job … and lives happily ever after” thing does happen (maybe even a majority of times), I suspect there’s a sizeable number just like me, who need to screw up a time or two to figure out how the world works. The thing is (comparing/contrasting with all those I went to school with) it’s only those like me who did. Oh, the rest did (mostly) OK, but ‘my types’ either did really well or failed massively (50:50). (I often wonder how much of "civilisation" is the result of, not your average/normal guys, but the 'screw-up made good'?).

I suspect Twain’s “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” reflects reality more often than not. It’s a right of passage (some/most?) men ‘must’ go through (and some never learn).

So don’t feel even a little guilty. You offered (going way out of your way) support. He’ll either pull his finger out, find a solution (and feel proud, independent and a touch superior for having done so) or not (there’s no guarantees in this fallen world). But, in a few years (or decades – some of us are slow learners), after he finds his niche, he’ll realise and maybe even say Thanks (both for the support, but especially for the kick in the pants).

  12. Missing ships movement is a serious offense in the US Navy.
    He's still getting off easy.
