Newly planted Chinese cabbage. The tilled patch is roughly 25' square with a row of beets planted on the extreme left. Watermelon in foreground.

How soon can I buy my grandkid a pellet gun?

Zeus checking out the cabbages and broccoli.

Please excuse the blue-tint to the pictures. I was in "food" mode and the color pallet had shifted to blue saturation.
Bought the daughter a Ruger 10-22 at age ten. Pellet gun, any time before that.
ReplyDeleteSavage Rascal .22 with .22 shorts or Aguila super colibri's. Just like a pellet rifle basically.
DeleteHow do you keep the slugs out of your cabbage? I've given up trying. ---ken
ReplyDeleteOur rabbits are smaller down here and I can kill them with birdshot; unlike the rabbits in your neck of the woods where you need to use Foster slugs.
DeleteI think my area has lower humidity and that deters the snails and slugs.
I didn't think of humidity so next year I'll try planting cabbage over soaker hose instead of watering with sprayer hose and sprinklers. Thanks.--ken
DeleteI wonder if Ken was referring to the crawling slimy kind of slug?
DeleteSlugs/snails are major issue here. I've tried everything, pine bark, wood pellets, ash, gravel, copper barriers, ... even slug pellets and nematodes don't seem to limit it/make a difference (neither does planting in rows, raised beds or post). I'm reduced to regular night 'hunts' as the only way.
DeleteI'd consider selling (a portion of) my soul for a cure.
Two options I've seen with mixed success. Suggest implementing both:
Delete1. Crushed eggshell perimeter around the plant/bed. The shells are sharp and hurt their foot.
2. At night put out a tray/dish (old tuna fish can) half filled with beer (say a prayer to St. Arnold of Soissons), the snails are attracted to the smell, drink, get drunk, fall in and drown. Change nightly.
I tried the beer and gave up and drank it instead. ---ken
DeleteHad my Crack Shot at age 8...

Zeus is a fine looking hound. Our very first GSD [redundancy alert] puppy came here in January
ReplyDeleteHe is about 90 lbs at 9 months old and full of love.
We still need to work on coming back off leash, but other than that, we are doing fine with him.
