Perverse incentives

'Splain to me why anybody would ever want to join NATO?

Ukraine never joined and they are being defended to the tune of hundreds-of-billions of dollars.

Germany has been a member for the better part of a century and has paid many billions. Tell me what it bought them? The privilege of having their arms twisted to give their Leopard tanks to Ukraine?

  1. Germany got the benefit of being protected by the US as a result has been and is spending much less than they would on their own. Indeed, Germany's defense spending is less than 2% of its GDP even now after promising to increase it, because it gets to free-load off the US and the rest of the alliance (but mainly the USA).

Germany is mainly being pressured to consent to let Poland send Poland's Leopards to Ukraine, not Germany's. But, Germany is apparently going to send all of 14 of its own stock to Ukraine - so for all that it's not a big give on their part.

But, after all, it's not like Germany is actually using their tanks, and they're down to 300 of them from the 5,000 they had in 1989. I doubt they'll miss the 14.

On a more humorous note, the purpose of NATO to paraphrase one British wag Hastings "Pug" Ismay, was to: Keep the Russians out (of Western Europe) The Americans In, and the Germans down -- and that worked.

  2. Ukraine's "aid" is just a method of laundering taxpayer money back to those who arranged for it to be sent in the first place. It is unaccountable, so where those billions went is really unknown.

  4. ERJ, it would seem the idea of the welfare state has expanded to the welfare international alliance system. Surely the system cannot have much more time.

  6. When the looting becomes so enormous and so obvious, you know that the elites are lowering themselves into the lifeboats and paddling briskly away from the heavily listing hull.
