Traditional Christian thought is that the greatest Gift of the Magi was the foreshadowing that Christ was not just the Messiah for the Jewish Nation but was to open the door of salvation to all who believed and acted on that faith.
Christ was to be the universal ("catholic" with a lower-case "c") path to eternal life.
