Jackson and Hillsdale county schools closed due to cyber-attack shutting down heating

The Jackson County Intermediate School District reported the outage to the system used by school districts in both counties occurred over the weekend, Nov. 12-13, and affects critical operating systems, including but not limited to heating, telephones, and classroom technology.    Source
I suppose it also might control locks and access.

  1. I like my wood stoves, oil lamps and non-electric propane heaters because if they stop putting out heat and light I can figure out what's wrong with them.---ken

  2. That Target hack was via the thermostat. I know I have had my telephone system disabled by people trying to hack. You just have to reboot. Takes a while to figure that out. Seems crazy when you have to put thermostates, CNC machines and telephone systems behind a fire wall. Who would have thought.

  3. Convenience trumps security every time. If it takes more time or costs a bit more to isolate critical systems it doesn't happen until you get this..

Every 'Smart' device is running an OS that is rarely updated or patched for security holes, and too many systems NEVER get patched because the Users refuse to allow for system maintenance. Compound that by IT being underfunded and overloaded with fluff projects critical systems don't get the care they need.
