Trivia

I wanted to get a better estimate of how much oatmeal I eat daily.

Starting September 5, 2021 every time I opened a new, 42 ounce cannister of oatmeal I wrote the date on the old lid and moved it over to the new container.

Eight cannisters consumed in 123 days provides an estimate of 2.7 ounces a day.

  1. That is a good practice for many things I use. My start was eye drops (Glaucoma) that never deliver what they say. Some last way longer, a good thing. Some not as long, very bad since in this case its a name brand and costs $600+ @ bottle. The copay is about $50 @ month. So, if it lasts 45 days, I pay two months copay every 45 days. Adds up fast and puts me in the donut hole every year. So, I started tracking my usage very carefully by writing the start and end date on the box the bottles came in. Believe it or not, I won the argument with the Pharmacy/Drug Ins carrier and got them to change the way they count the number of drops per ml/bottle. Saved me app $500 last year.
Now I track stuff on several consumables to facilitate keeping in stock, especially with current out of stock issues.
    Great idea with marker.

  2. Half a cup a day of oatmeal, for myself, each morning, along with a banana, then 3 cups of coffee and a cigar. My personal breakfast of champions.

  3. I buy oatmeal in 50 lb. bags. it's a lot cheaper that way. ---ken

  4. I buy a 25 lb bag of organic old fashioned (15 min.) rolled oats. I keep it in a 5 gallon pail with a tight lid and cinnamon sticks in it to keep the bugs away. My kitchen oat supply sits in a 1.5 litre glass jar. Four times a week with raisins or diced figs thrown in while cooking, lasts one year. I finish breakfast with a big spoonful of OG unsalted peanut butter (to complete the protein) and a pint or two of tea. No need for a morning coffee break with those slow processing oats.

  5. Grew up eating oatmeal almost every day (cereal was a weekend treat, too expensive). 50-lb bag of rolled oats lasted a while. Still like oatmeal, couple times a week. A handful of raisins and some crumbled pecans with the brown sugar makes it a treat.

  6. I know much I eat a day (1/2 cup), but not how long it lasts. An interesting experiment.

Also, I know 20 to 24 ounces of yogurt will last me a week.
