December Electricity Use

December 2020. 1061 kW-hrs used for the month. Green bars are electricity use and black line is outside temperature.

December 2021. 772 kW-hrs used for the month.

That is a 27% reduction. The major difference is that Kubota moved out while the ever lovely and talented Mrs ERJ, Belladonna and I are still here.

The heavy-hitters for electricity consumption are hot water and the clothes dryer.

  1. Reuse your dryer heat... Vent it indoors:

I have an older one and it heats the house (when operating) nicely in the winter.

  2. Tried that once, the humidity introduced into the living space was horrendous. Confensate ran down the windows like a waterfall.

    1. Where Joe and I are, often humidity is a nice thing to introduce into the living space....
Not sure where you are, perhaps things are different there.

  3. With the limited amount of laundry for only two people, I have been venting the dryer into the house through a homemade filter setup for years. I have not had any problem with condensation, and when I run the dryer it is one of the few times that the humidity in the basement reached normal levels instead of very dry during the winter.

I mainly have condensation issue upstairs when my wife is doing a lot of cooking. That is rarely anymore. Since her health has declined, she rarely cooks spaghetti sauce or chili all day.

    1. I suppose different climate, different structure etc. would lead to dramatically different results. Cold here but 100% humidity, 28° and foggy feels colder than 0° to me (I've seen alot of both).

  4. Several of the radio stations I used to work for vented the waste heat from the transmitters into the building during the winter. A 35 KW output transmitter operating at 85% efficiency produces a good bit of heat. The heating system was mainly used when the transmitter was down for repairs or maintenance.

  5. Lesse, kubota = 1
    ERJ + Mrs. ERJ + B = 3

Sums is 4 parts, or 25% each?

    1. You have a point but some usage will not track with number of people.

The electricity used to run the blower on the furnace, the refrigerator and freezer use. Those will be insensitive to the number of people in the house.

  6. We got some barn kittens in November, but it has been too cold to put them straight into the barn, so we have them in an unheated sunroom/front porch. It has been so cold that we needed to run a small, electric shop heater in front of their enclosure. Our electric bill doubled in the first month. Last week I bought a heated cat house, which uses only 20W. I expect this will return us to normal. The two of us use very little power except for the water heater and the fridge. LEDs everywhere. The electric fence does use about $10/month.
