Geometry as taught by a parent

"Mom.  Come here."  the child hollered.  He did not sound as if he had multiple, compound fractures.

"Nope.  You come here." the parent responded back.

"What?"  child hollered back.

"What are you doing?" parent asked.

"Nothing." child responded (as any parent would have bet money on).

"Then you come here because it is twice as far from here-to-there than it is from there-to-here." parent said.

"What???" child replied.  "You aren't making any sense."

"I am doing something and I will have to walk back to finish it.  You can come out here and do 'nothing' just as easily where I am as you can in your bedroom.  See, it is twice as far from here-to-there than it is from there-to-here." parent counseled.
