Tensions ease

At the time of this writing it is being reported that Justin Trudeau is dissolving the Emergencies Power Act powers he was using to freeze/confiscate financial assets of truckers (and supporters) who were protesting his Covid policies.

I am not going to succumb to the temptation to speculate about motives or identifying key data-points that may have tipped his decision.

Rather I am going to applaud him for doing what I think is "The Right Thing".

Thank-you for stepping back from the brink, Prime Minister Trudeau.

Now, about those threats to revoke the commercial licences of the truckers and the civil servants who were fired for donating to the truckers...

  2. Apparently the account freezing is not necessarily being eased and is still being done via other court orders etc. It ain't over yet.

    1. If true, the ball is still in-play.

However, it shifts the burden to .gov since they will not be able to press one button and lock up 10,000 accounts. I assume (sometimes a bad move) that it will have to be done one account at a time.

Not optimal but better than it was.

It has a chilling effect on my desire to want to travel to Toronto as a tourist if they can look at my posts and decide to turn off my credit card. Maybe Mrs ERJ can buy gasoline with her good looks but I sure as heck cannot.

    2. ERJ, the freeze orders are only for banks in Canada... It would be much more difficult for him to get foreign banks to close.

I think one reason his orders are, at least officiay, scaled back is to prevent bank runs and loss of confidence.
A bank who is shown willing to freeze accounts without a court order is a bank people lose trust in, therefore it is a bank that will lose business (and income) fast.

  3. Simple solution for Castreau....rescind the order officially and keep implementing the abuses unofficially. The left never ever gives up power willingly. So expect them to make an end run and implement their abuses in different ways.

    1. I suspect that will happen, or rather continue to happen - he's been ignoring the law for the last 2 years; why stop now?
I think the issue here was taking too big a step without approval of the right people...
