Dave Freer, author of the book Cloud Castles asked readers to share their impressions of the book on social media. He specifically requested that those of us who write blogs use our platform to give him a plug.
Freer took a risk
He introduces us to the protagonist in a way that makes the protagonist seem unlikable. That is a risk.
Perhaps more precisely, he introduces us to the protagonist in a way that reminds us of ourselves when we were young, judgemental and not-nearly-as-smart-as-we-thought-we-were. That is very, very risky.
He power-writes his way out of it in about twenty pages but if you are a reader with a short attention span or can only read in short, little bursts than you might toss this book in the bit-bucket before you get to the more enjoyable stuff. If you are that kind of reader than this might not be the book for you.
To summarize, if you cannot read twenty pages of prose that will make you cringe because it reminds you of a younger, less lovable you...maybe you shouldn't spend the money for this book.
However, if you have the discipline to drill through twenty pages because you know the book will start to accelerate and the book will make you laugh and make a few tears show up in your eye...then don't waste any time. Get the book.
Hmm...
ReplyDeleteI saw the listing for this book; didn't sound like something I'd like, but methinks it's time for another look.
