Except for the fact that this is in standing water, it would make a spiffy shelter from the weather. Or, at least two sides of a shelter. |
Is that a Pileated nesting spot with the elongated hole, or just how they dig things out looking for food ?

ReplyDeleteThe Emerald Ash Borer has been a windfall for the Pileated Woodpeckers. First the EAB which inhabit the living and dying ash trees. Then all of the beetles and bugs that live in dead, standing wood.
The tree in the picture is a Silver (aka, soft) Maple.
My recollection is that the lower peninsula (mitten) of Michigan was ALL standing water in the late winter time. Nothing but a giant sand plateau about 10 feet above Lake Michigan that freezes up and doesn't allow meltwaters to percolate down.
