Gardens and fairs

Our first cucumbers of the season. The variety is Sashimi

Our first zucchini were picked this week. So far we have harvested five of them.

God willing, we are entering into a moister period. It will be a blessing if we pick up an inch of rain over the next few days.

County Fair

A cozy piece of music about a county fair

Mrs ERJ and I found Mary's Elephant Ears. The young lady at church is the fiance of the (very) young owner of the business. You could tell they were very much in love. That is, you knew they were a couple before they opened their mouths.

She was filling up this rack of samples when we walked up to the window. Please embiggen or zoom in on the photo. Each elephant ear is a work of art.

You know the barbecue is going to be good when the cooks look like these two guys.

D's and C's works from a trailer and their current location (when they are not working the fair) is on North Grand River in Lansing.

I was intrigued by the pattern on this goat. Animals' patterns are camouflage. It is easy to image that this animal would disappear in the shade beneath trees. The bright bands look like where sun is percolating between branches and the light dapples look like dapples of sunlight coming though the leaf canopy. Even if it moved, it would be like the breeze bending the boughs.

If nothing else, this pattern excels at interrupting the silhouette of the goat. I bet you had to look closely to figure out what it was a picture of.

  1. That goat coat pattern would be easy to transfer on a wool blanket / poncho for woods roaming. Some bleach for the cones so as to leave dark patches and crooked branches behind.

  2. Joe Walsh recorded a song mid 70s called County Fair. It is a bit of a rocker.

  6. Zucchini is not a cucumber. Is a member of the squash family. I know this because I love cucumbers and dislike squash. People been trying to pass zucchini by me for years... That dog won't hunt.
Easiest way to prove it is by pickling both and having a taste test. The textures are different.
