It can be surprisingly difficult to tease out which variable is the "cause" and which is the "effect". It is naive to assume one way or another.
Dementia
My father passed away of dementia. It is not one of the better ways to go.
Consequently, I am starting to pay attention to things I can do to reduce my risk of dementia.
As I read the popular-press articles, I get the twitches; what if most of the smart-money had their causality reversed?
For instance, a typical article might state "Data proves that people who are more socially active are less likely to suffer from dementia!"
My dad became increasingly paranoid as he slipped into dementia. He did not relish spending time socializing with strangers. My experience was that the causality was the reverse of what all of the smart-people say. My experience was that people sliding into dementia avoided socializing. People who were not sliding into dementia were less resistant to new social situations.
In a similar way, Dad pulled away from new cognitive challenges and let go of Sudoku as his cognitive abilities slipped away. So do "new cognitive challenges" prevent dementia or is it evidence that it hasn't started to sink its claws into the subject?
The question might seem fussy and academic, but it is not.
Professional and career success
I am engaged in an email discussion with a brilliant person who contends "I.Q. is very highly correlated to professional achievement, therefore IQ is critical for society"
I don't quibble with the correlation between the echelons of upper-management being higher than the general public but I see that another hand might be in play.
High scores on college entrance exams, the ACT and SAT are accepted by MENSA as proof of high I.Q. Ergo, it is difficult to get admitted to a competitive, high-prestige university without high ACT and SAT scores.
To punch into the ranks of middle-management, it is almost mandatory to have a graduate degree, preferably from a high-prestige university. To get admitted into graduate school, one needs to take either the GRE and the GMAT. Both are accepted by MENSA as valid I.Q. tests.
My point is that there are several layers of filters that weed out people who do not have a quick grasp on those types of material that is most amenable to testing. Surely, every student has had the "Ah-ha!" when they realized a tidbit the professor dropped in lecture was going to be on the test because it was a shoe-in for the timed format of the test or the A.B.C.D.(None of the above) format.
It would be totally weird if the usual measures of career success did NOT show strong correlation between IQ and success because it is the primary means used to select and promote with nepotism being a very distant second-place. So generalizing from "Highly successful people have high I.Q.s and therefore society will collapse unless the people with the very highest I.Q.s continue to run the show." contains a bit of circular logic.
Perhaps as important as quick recall of "testable information" is the ability to entertain multiple interpretations of data.
People used to tell jokes. A typical joke involves a quick sketch of the situation and a picture is painted in the listener's mind. Then one additional bit of information is added that invalidates the "obvious" picture and the listener must be able to abandon the literal, obvious interpretation and embrace one of the other scenarios that reconciles the new information with the original (but misleading) word-sketch.
It is tragic that people no longer feel safe sharing jokes. The younger generation has been deprived of a tool that teaches mental agility and society will suffer as a result.
Anomalous I think are the changes to reading materials presented in public school today vs my generation vs the one before mine.
ReplyDeleteAre the books being dumbed down to match the kids, or do the kids now rise only as far as the bar requires?
I don't approve, but I get why kids don't read Orwell and Huxley anymore. But Shakespeare?
The new teaching methods seem designed to produce a product that is barely literate, innumerate, and programmed to believe what comes to them on their cell phones and NEVER think for themselves.
ReplyDeleteThey don't read ole Bill because they have NO idea what most of the words mean and were robbed the background to work it out.
Phonics is dead.
DeleteHappily phonics is having a 2nd (or nth) wind and is all the rage again. Turns out people would prefer their kids actually literate.

Some of these are a few years old. The consenus now is closer to "anything but phonics is cruelty to children".
Jope springs etwrnal.
Phonics was murdered, and Math instruction has sucked since New Math in the 60s. Tom Lerher has a song about how bad it was and is..
DeleteI took care of my mother in her last years, and would have to agree about the causality difference. As she lost her memories and thoughts, she became more resistant to going out and socializing. The few times that I insisted, even though they were all with friends and family, were difficult and stressful for her.
ReplyDeleteWhatever the sick care industry says...do the opposite. See what the naturopaths and alternative practitioners have to say and do that. Alzheimer's is called "type 3 diabetes" by the alternative medicine community, but western medicine rejects the belief that metabolic disorders related to glucose, the brain's primary fuel and food, could have anything to do with problems in the brain later on. Also no money to be made from healthy folks.
ReplyDeleteMulti-tasking, among other things keep us active. And humor forces people to 'build' scenarios in their heads to make the joke work. Just seeing a meme or reading a joke is NOT as effective.
ReplyDeleteMost universities in Michigan and across the nation have no longer have any requirement for either a SAT or an ACT score. This despite the fact that taking the SAT is a state of Michigan requirement to graduate high school. Standards are lower and/or non-existent. It bodes not well.
ReplyDeleteCould it be that jokes are less and less appreciated because it requires a modicum of intellect to understand most of them and find them amusing? Couple that with the fact that the average IQ of society has dropped precipitously over the past few decades and is continuing to drop and that may be a reason why people are more easily "offended" by jokes...because they lack the capability of understanding them.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately some of the smartest people I know lack the most important thing COMMON SENSE
ReplyDeleteJoe,
ReplyDeleteI believe you are exactly correct - it's difficult to interpret the data. One of my favorite ones is - people who are sick tend to have low levels of vitamin D, therefore, vitamin D must ward off sickness. Except that people who are sick tend to stay indoors out of the sunlight so by the time they get their blood tested they have low levels of vitamin D. Is vitamin D protective against certain diseases? Maybe, but there's no way to know from that particular piece of information.
Hubby had Alzheimer's but also had massive medical problems. In his case, which came first. Saddest day was when he looked at me while sitting in front of computer an said "I don't know how to turn it on". Aunt was having what Mitch had a couple days ago. Called TIA's, small strokes that look like you are staring into space. Have a POA for a man with Alzheimer and he lost 2 car's a couple of weeks ago. Police found them about 5 block from his house. He's clueless as to why he left them. Amalyoids along different pathways to brain. None act the same because the amalyoids clog up all of the different paths into the brains.
ReplyDelete" My experience was that people sliding into dementia avoided socializing"
ReplyDeleteAccording to that I've been "sliding into dementia" for 60+ years. People are assholes, people in "corporate" are assholes on steroids. If you have stuff to do, go do it and if it requires leaving footprints on assholes' backs, so be it - lead, follow, or get out of the way.
I will testify that keeping the mind active - that means Engaging in Aggressive Problem Solving, and that's not just "mental activity" it also involves keeping the body in motion - - keeps the mnd active and that seems to be the greatest antidote to dementia. I suspect there's a biological component to it as well - the human body runs on chemistry - so it may be that, at some point, cell degradation from chemical effect overcomes activity-based dementia prevention, but there's no reason to not go down swinging. Make the bastards have to hold you down while they nail the lid shut (Pro Tip - always pack a gun, and in a major caliber like .45, so you can shoot the bastards with the hammers, if you can you still have lots of years left). You should die because you used up all that your body had to offer and then some, not because you let your brain atrophy.
I'm so dumb that nobody would notice if I had dementia. But I started a strict carnivore diet two months ago and one of the first results I noticed was the cessation of "brain fog" that had plagued me after eating a carb-heavy meal. Even my vision has improved. It also helps to have lost 40 lbs. The sources I've been reading, especially "Outlive" by Peter Attia, say that triggering autophagy through fasting and exercise enables the body to seek out and destroy the damaged proteins and plaques that cause Alzheimer's. So that is now a priority.
