A Conversation Overheard

I was sitting in a comfortable chair while waiting for the socially-adept and very vivacious Mrs ERJ to finish chatting with her friends from church.

The chair was mostly out-of-sight and is a good place to listen. It was also near the Christmas tree that is adorned with tags with donation opportunities.

One of the personalities at church is Gloriously Victorious. That is not her REAL name, it is her name translated into English.

Gloriously Victorious was telling one of her buddies that she was snow-birding down to Florida in the near future and she was going to donate all of the food in her freezer (that has not expired) to the St Vincent de Paul food-pantry.

I thought that was genius! She doesn't need to worry about her freezer going Tango-Uniform while she is soaking up the sun and coming back to a stinking, drippy mess. She will unplug the freezer after emptying it and start fresh when she comes back

I doubt that all food-pantries are equipped to take frozen foods but some are. According to the conversation I was eavesdropping on, this is something that Gloriously Victorious has been doing for several years.

It might be worth your time to call around to the local food-pantries if you find yourself heading to warmer climes to pass the winter away.

  1. Worth checking on indeed ERJ. That I recall, the food closet that my parents volunteered at for years had this capability.

  2. Unless the freezer is like my freezer. Just an estimate, but around $1500 (at yesterday's prices) worth of meat lives in mine at all times. One reason I store gasoline is to run the generator long enough to can it all in a grid down situation. Freezer alarms, and a back-up person are useful as well for shorter term events or travel. A couple of steaks, a chicken and a chuck roast? Sure, off to the food pantry or a neighbor.

  4. When my Dad passed he had a freezer full of frozen dinners. The hospice care givers and home health aids feasted for a couple weeks thanks to him. Thanks Dad!

  5. I dunno if they have them up North - I didn't see them until I moved to TN. Most churches here have a 'blessings box' outside. A little wooden enclosed stand maybe 2'x4', contains canned and dry food goods. Meant for the people in the immediate community. Every church has one (and every corner down here has a church it seems). They bigger churches do the drive-up food pantry thing too, but the tiniest 200 sq ft church will have a few bags of beans, some pasta and tuna fish and a jar of mayo out there.
Personally I prefer this way. I knew people in NY who did it, I'm sure they are here, too: drive-up pantrys get targeted by grifters. People (who don't truly NEED it) will drive around town hitting half a dozen of them. They figure its free, so why shouldn't they? The blessing box is sometimes used in place of a trip to the store (which is a 20 min drive away). There is no stigma attached to using it, almost like a community pantry - I need a can of corn, but don't have time to run to town... check the blessings box. The Lord works in mysterious ways!
