  5. Met an ambitious young man years ago that wrote a business plan where he convinced many of the local HOA communities, run by rabid Gestapo types, to hire him. His plan allowed him access anytime and he would patrol the streets several times a week. He would look for any, all, or marginally contrived "violations" and report to the HOA for issuance of fines. He then received a cut from the fines as well as a monthly fee.

    Problem was that he also owned a local "Mail and More" store. Word gradually spread throughout the many HOA's that it was his business and he was responsible for their financial losses. Didn't take long before the store went belly-up and he moved from the area because of threats to shorten his lifespan.
    We were looking to buy a different home a couple of years back and the first deciding question to a realtor is whether it was in a HOA. Automatic deal breaker.........
