No, everybody does not adore fireworks

It is my opinion that German Shepherd Dogs are approximately 5% feces, by body-weight, the evening before July 4th. By morning, they are 0% feces.

We had at least two episodes. Mrs ERJ took care of the first one(s). I cleaned up again in the morning. Thank goodness we have a tiny bit of Berber carpet in the house. It will get a good shampooing AFTER the July 4th weekend. And we will do it outside.

Note to self: If not-living-at-home-kids want us to provide free kennel service, the answer is NO! If you cannot afford kennel service then that means you cannot afford to go on vacation.

  1. Sigh, hate to hear that. On the other paw, right in the middle of the town's fireworks last night, a couple came by walking their Lab and it was as calm as could be.

  2. My Liberal In-Laws have a Labrador Retriever - dogs specifically bred to sit by your side while you blast away with a 12 ga. and then fetch your duck (or look at you in disgust in my case). Anyway, their retarded Lab is scared feces-less by fireworks. Literally. Then hides under the bed shaking. Perfect dog for Liberals.

  3. Don't be too hard on the poor pup.
I have a 120lb GSD that is a fearless protector of house and home and grandkids. However, let a storm roll in with thunder and lightning and he is the most pitiful thing you've ever seen.

  4. There is nothing worse than a gun-shy labrador retriever, buuuut; fireworks are in a different class of noise with lots of frequency changes.

We had some luck kenneling the bitch in the basement. Once the fireworks subsided, and she was leashed we went outside, but her demeanor was whacked. Just a horrible event for dogs.

Some enterprising individual may come up with earmuffs for dogs. Lotsa potential there.

  5. I am lucky, I have a ankle biter (Chihuahua) I inherited from my ex wife and she is calm around fireworks and storms and even stays by my side when I use to be able to shoot targets out on BLM land. She is trained to use puppy pads when I have to leave her. I couldn't ask for a better mutt. I believe I got the better end of the deal...

  6. I have found that if the dog likes beer, a small amount calms them, a bit more will make 'em go to sleep.
Failing beer, then wine coolers. Dose carefully though.
For a lab size dog, I used to use a quarter cup.
    YMMV

  7. I was dog sitting my neighbor's 120 pound female GSD and both she and my female GSD (normal 70 pound size) were in my lap as my neighbor down the road had his own personal fireworks festival going on for what seemed to be an hour or more. Both are fearful of T-storms and gunfire and fireworks. However if you were to try to walk across my neighbor's yard when she (female GSD) is in the yard you may get a reminder that you are not welcome and your only hope is you can run faster than she can at 9 years old. My female would bark but then lead a burglar into the house and help them take all my stuff. Not a guard dog by any means but good company.

  8. One catahoula puppies were fine as was mom. Dax took 10 mg of melatonin to take the edg3 off his anxiety. No matter how much you bark the occurrence of random fireworks is beyond your control. A metaphor for us all.
