I saw this while walking the stairs at the hospital

Design intent. Two bolts, washer compressed.

Missing bolt. Broken welds

Other side of staircase. One nut loose. The other missing. Tilt of fastener suggests structure may have shifted.

Other flights had issues but the 4th floor landing was in a class of its own.

  1. Did you talk to the man in facilities? He may be aware, and not have the tools, men, materials to make it right.

The *man in facilities*, for those who don't know, is the guy whose neck is tilted back, pretty much permanently, from looking up at the structure, the fasteners and utilities overhead.

    1. I did not.

The tower was built in the late sixties. That weld has been MIA that long.

The fastener missing the nut had been painted and then the nut remover based on rust. It did not unscrew it's self.

Yeah, it is shabby to step out of channels but I have zero ability to follow up.

  2. My advice is to avoid that hospital entirely. Yeah, I know... But what if there is a fire or an electrical issue and the elevators are not working ? That is a possibility considering the evidence you have seen so far of negligence. In that case, many people would suddenly need to use the stairs at once.
Do you remember the walkway in Kansas City that collapsed and killed over 100 people ?

  3. Agree with Dogsledder. Fifteen years in Plant Ops in my hospital and I tell you now that what you saw guarantees that your hospital is slapdash and half-assed. The accrediting body The Joint Commission should have found and written this up many years ago.

    Find a new hospital.

  4. I know the problem is that "hospitals have doctors" and "doctors have patients". Your Mom's doctor may not be associated with another hospital. But you should make inquiries, in my opinion.
