Fine Art Tuesday

William Fraser Garden born 1856 in Kent, England, died in 1921 in Holywell, Wales.

Garden was "not good with money" and spent the later portion of his life living in a hotel and painting scenes from the estuary of the River Dee. Fortunately for us, his lack of money-skills resulted in a prodigious output of paintings in an effort to make ends meet.

Estuaries occur where the tides pulse water in-and-out of river deltas and are extraordinarily rich in food resources and were among the first sites heavily populated by humans. The Dee Estuary is notable for the large land area and its flatness.

Garden's landscapes are singularly flat and lacking vertical definition.

It's like a Waffle House but serves Beer and has Bunks

One of the conversations I overheard from the Groom's Men's table was a discussion of the various entertainment available "just off base" in various parts of the world. It is enlightening to see the ramifications of local laws.

"No, it is not a bar. It is like a Waffle House" the gentleman with the worst haircut was trying to explain.

"But they serve beer?" the skinny dude asked quizically. "Doesn't that make them a bar?"

"Nope. In (that country) bars serve distilled goods. Basically, it was a Waffle House that also serves beer" bad haircut affirmed.

"Do they have bunks?" one of the more portly men asked.

"Why would they have bunks?" skinny-guy asked.

"'Cause if I walked into a Waffle House that served beer I would never leave. They would have everything: Food, Entertainment, Employment, girls...everything I need."
