Eight foot long, Black Locust rounds split into thirds. |
Mrs ERJ and I have been cutting some Black Locust for fence posts. The key to splitting them seems to be to find the dominant knot on the 8' length and plunge cut with the tip of the chainsaw at the knot. Then use a wedge from there.
Cones from Norway Spruce. I found them mounded like this and assume they were cached by squirrels. I picked up a bucket full and will dry them out. Then soak them in wax for fire-starters.
They make GREAT firestarters!
