Nursing homes, laptops and cruising the Internet

Mom's roommate at the assisted living center has been a peach.

Both women are bedridden. Consequently the room is close to the nurse's kiosk.

Mom's roommate is surprisingly young. In fact, she is very close to my age. Back when she worked, she was was a med-tech and worked in a lab. Unlike Mom, "J" is very sharp and her fingers are not debilitated by arthritis.

Her daughter is almost an hour south of the home. Her son lives somewhere "up North" which could be anywhere from an hour to 13 hours away.

I would go stir-crazy trying to access the internet through a phone.

I talked with one of the home's employees and they have no objection to residents having a laptop as long as the recharging cords do not present a tripping hazard. They did not believe a low-end machine would be a high risk regarding theft.

The question at hand is: Do I offer my much disliked Chromebook to Mom's roommate? She might say no. If she says "Yes" then I can have it waiting in the truck with all the cookies/passwords scrubbed clean. If somebody steals the machine...well, I didn't like it very much anyway.

I know many of my readers have been down this road or are in similar circumstances. What do you think?

  1. Two thoughts. First, if you offer someone a machine, expect to be tech support for it as well. Second, make it clear if it is a gift/loan/life estate (which I'm sure you would anyway).

Seems like a nice thing to do.

    1. Agreed. I think it is a good idea for her and her roommate and will help with social interaction.

Make sure her roommate doesn't feel left out; there are a couple ways to do that, from getting her an account so she can share the machine, to helping her get her own machine (and supporting her)

  2. My vote is Yes, ERJ. It is a nice thing to do and it would be a noble purpose for it.

  3. Chrome book has a Powerwash setting to reset to factory just as you describe. They do need a gmail account to use it as intended.

  4. Very kind of you to think of that. Just make sure you help her get started by bookmarking some of the best sites for her. Like Eaton Rapids Joe. ---ken

  5. Good idea. We routinely pass older laptops to those in need.

  6. So, I say give it to her with a Norton subscription. You are going to see her regularly. If she gets hacked on your Chromebook and looses some money it could be bad.
