The Federal Goverment already has a tuition assistance program

I ran into a former employer today. Conversation veered to the current state of the nation.

She reminded me that the Federal Government already has a tuition assistance program. It comes with a few conditions: You have to take an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. You have to obey lawfully given orders even when you don't agree with the politics of the Commander-In-Chief. There are minimum fitness standards. The program is only open to citizens.

She wondered which of those conditions caused Progressives the most pain? Obviously, it causes them so much dissonance that they forget it exists.

  1. "The program is only open to citizens." Not true. I know several folks who received their citizenship at the condition of honorable service.

    1. Thank-you for the correction.

Again, why doesn't the left want to talk about "honorable service"? Like you said, it can be a path to citizenship... isn't that what they want?

  2. The catch is that you have to do something in return - they want benefits (here, money) without having to do anything for it.

  3. I think Jonathan has it right. They want it immediately, not after a period of work.

  4. I spent 12 years on active duty in the Air Force (‘68 to’80). During my last 6 years I availed myself of the educational opportunities on base (Wurtsmith AFB) and cranked out an associates from Alpena CC, a BA from Park College and started on my MA from Central Michigan U. I used the tuition assistance program for most of my schooling and the GI bill for my masters. Of course in the mid 70’s a credit hour from alpena CC was $6 or $9 now its $125-197, grad school in early 80’s was about $60 an hour vs. about 600 an hour.
