Creating Adaptive Competence

I read this article titled Creating Adaptive Competence by Tom Matt in the Lansing area Healthy and Fit magazine back in April.

I re-read it a couple of days ago when I took Belladonna into Urgent Care for Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye).  The article aged well.  A few excerpts.

Successful aging is how we will create our personal adaptive competencies.
Approximately 90 million (of 317 million Americans) suffer from chronic disease....nine out of ten deaths for people over 65 are associated with nine chronic diseases:  Congestive Heart Failure, Chronic Lung Disease, Cancer, Coronary Vascular Disease, Diabetes, Chronic Liver Disease and Dementia.
(Nobody wants to) succumb to a slow spiral of dependency.

Deciding to live better is the way to gain better odds

Here are some tips:
  • Manage and understand stress (ERJ note: Know where your stress comes from)
  • Never ignore a system
  • Eat more whole foods
  • Improve your sleep habits
  • Take vacations  (ERJ note: Having lunch out can be a vacation if you have the right mind-set)
  • Stay connected
  • Become less sedentary (Schedule time to move!!)
  • Play more and have fun
  • Ignite your life
