"Stupid should hurt"
Actually, "stupid" does hurt.
Stupid is another word for wanton destruction. Our bodies generate pain when we are destroying them. It is how they communicate to us.
Put your hand on a hot-burner on your stove and it hurts! Kids learn at an early age to not put their hands on burners.
Pain is a gift from God. Dire things happen when we lose that gift.
Leprosy is when our immune system kills our nerves as it attempts to destroy the bacteria hiding in them. Inability to feel pain means that wounds to our extremities are not addressed and the resulting infections spread. Diabetics have similar issues with their feet.
Our bodies also attempt to communicate to us when we are doing stupid things that don't directly impact the body. In some ways, our bodies are much more intelligent than our central nervous system in recognizing the sunk-cost fallacy and toxic people. It tries to tell us via head-aches, indigestion, muscle pain and nightmares or inability to sleep.
If you are living in pain and cannot find a physical reason for it, then it might be worth your time to stand in front of a mirror and examine your decisions. Are you trapped in a dead-end job? Are you screwing somebody over? Are you mooching off of productive people? Did you make promises that you will not honor? Did you decide to make your own rules and it isn't working out the way you fantasized? Is your pride preventing you from acknowledging that you made some wrong-turns in life, that maybe you aren't perfect?
The way to make that kind of pain go away is to make different decisions. You can say you are older and wiser. When we are children we think and speak and act like a child. We become adults when we think and speak and act like adults.
You'd make a good preacher, Joe. Or at least an occasional fill in when the pastor is on vacation.
ReplyDeleteYou are too kind.
DeleteI am not a good fit. I look more like a fisherman or a carpenter than a preacher. My vocabulary and sentence structure tends to be more like the first two professions as well. Sadly, people have expectations.
You sell yourself short. Seems to me several millennia ago there was someone who has been called both a fisher and carpenter. I'd rather have plain and simply than a Jim Baker or Jimmy Swaggert.
DeleteWell ERJ,... Jesus was a carpenter and the first earthly leader of the Church was a fisherman... The world NEEDS more "plain and simply..."
DeleteThe two above make the point that I was gonna make....
DeleteYou WOULD make a good preacher. I've met you and talked with you IRL, and I can say that you could be a great preacher, or at least a good Pastor, should you choose to take the burden

Ouch and well said, ERJ.
Preaching well involves communication and inspiring others.
ReplyDeleteYou do both very well within the confines if the internet and the blogging platform you use.
Many thanks for the great work!
You are an asset to humanity and the Lord.
