What would it take to reinstitute the draft?

The military draft was shelved due to issues with "involuntary servitude" being prohibited in the US Constitution.

Combine the diminished recruitment from legacy Americans and the increasing potential of Stalingrad-type engagements in military adventures, and with the potential for "drone" technology to mow down vast numbers of personnel it would not be surprising if military planners were blowing the dust off of plans to reinstitute the draft.

One way around the "involuntary servitude" issue would be to make the service optional with the caveat that certain privileges like access to student loans, access to scholarships and grants that have Federal funding, the privilege to work in the public sector, access to certain kinds of welfare and the privilege of being able to vote be contingent on military-service-when-called and honorable-discharge.

In order to be Constitutional, this would have to apply to men, women, LGalphaBeT alike.

And in the interest of avoiding the appearance of programming non-traditional candidates to fail: Candidates would be required to repeat boot-camp until they meet the physical requirements for transition to in-theater service. Opting out would generate a less-than-honorable discharge.

  1. I didn't know that being able to vote is a "privilege" . But when the votes aren't really counted I guess it doesn't matter. --ken

  2. It sounds like you want Federal Service similar to the book version of Starship Troopers. Heinlein airbrushes the veteran's revolution that set up the proposed society but it must have been brutal.

  3. I'm not opposed to this idea, as long as it is first applied to all current federal employees, most especially including members of the House and Senate.

  4. You'll wind up with another iteration of the Vietnam era morons. GT scores of 20 and those that can't tie shoes. Bad enough scores are waiverable now.

  5. If they try and re-start the draft, it will have to be with provisions stating NO deferments of any kind, what so ever.

No elected positions may be held without an Honorable Discharge from our armed forces, Full four-year hitch, no National Guard or "National Service" may apply. Just look at how many of our electorate, including current and former potus (potusi?) would be wiped off the slates.

  6. Every time I get around a group of wimmens who start gaggling about equality, I pipe up and ask which one of them will be signing up for the draft?

  7. All it would take to reenact a draft is an act of Congress...perhaps even just an Executive Order. The system is already in place and eligible men have been required to register with Selective Service for more than 50 years. The real question would be how successful such an attempt might be. I would suspect there would be massive noncompliance.
