Foreign Languages

One of the items on my bucket list is to become proficient in a foreign language.  My primary goal is to keep my mind sharp.  My second goal is to increase my capabilities and my marketability.

The picture in my head is that I would focus on being able to translate written, technical articles from a foreign language into English.  My comfort level regarding an accurate translation is highest under those parameters.  I want to think that I am technical enough to reality check the English text.

A quick review of the translation market shows the following 360 day demand/supply.  I am listing those language pairs where the target language is English and am listing from highest demand to lowest demand:
Khmer, Lao, Burmese, Hmong, Tibetan, Somali, Nepali, Tajik, Tagrinya, Hausa, Igbo, Amharic, Mongolian.

Hmmm.  This may take a little bit of rethinking.  Comments from "the real world" will be much appreciated.

  1. Don't know how marketable it would make you but if I were to try to learn another language it would be Spanish, simply because it's spoken so frequently in the United States. I feel like it would be to my advantage to be able speak to and, even more importantly, understand what the Spanish-speaking people are saying.
