Bay of Fundy

The Bay of Fundy, immediately north east of Maine, has the most extreme tides in the world due to its length being a "harmonic" of the daily tidal cycle. Add the depth and the taper and you have a massive organ-pipe effect amplifying that base tidal swings.

Hurricane Lee is projected to be in the vicinity of Bay of Fundy at approximately 2:00 AM Sunday. Peak high-tide is projected to be at 2:53 AM at 44 feet. The storm surge will add to the already impressive tides.

If the eye of Hurricane Lee tracks the west shore of the bay as one computer model (orange line) predicts then the height and the direction of the waves will be additive.

Folks on the north end of the Bay of Fundy might want to consider where they will weather the storm should its path veer in their direction. Give yourself time to evacuate.

  1. Wow. That will be a thing to see (hopefully on remote video, with no-one actually there recording it).

  3. The hurricane caused extensive destruction to port facilities and communities along the Bay of Fundy coast in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as well as Maine, particularly Calais, St. Andrews, St. George, Saint John, Moncton, Sackville, Amherst, Windsor and Truro.

Much of the devastation was attributed to a two-metre storm surge created by the storm which coincided with a perigean spring tide; the Bay of Fundy having one of the highest tidal ranges in the world. The Saxby Gale storm surge produced a water level which gave Burntcoat Head, Nova Scotia, the honor of having the highest tidal range ever recorded. It is also thought to have formed the long gravel beach that connects Partridge Island, Nova Scotia, to the mainland.

  4. I've been on a ship docked in the Bay of Fundy - the tide range is really impressive. At high tide you're looking down at the dock; at low tide it was 2 decks above the ship...

  5. Tidal bores, where the tide comes in so fast, it arrives with a standing wave. You used to be able to see this phenomenon at Moncton, but the creation of a causeway has throttled the tidal flows back. I've had to outrun the tide on the shoreline of the bay, which is lined with bluffs such that access is limited - this is the area called 'the flowerpots'. Literally, running my ass off to get back to the steps before getting soaked.

    1. Check it out at Wiki: The Petitcodiac River formerly had the highest bore in North America at over 2 metres (6.6 ft) in height, but causeway construction between Moncton and Riverview in the 1960s led to subsequent extensive sedimentation which reduced the bore to little more than a ripple. After considerable political controversy, the causeway gates were opened on April 14, 2010, as part of the Petitcodiac River Restoration Project and the tidal bore began to grow again.[23] The restoration of the bore has been sufficient that in July 2013, professional surfers rode a 1 metre (3.3 ft)-high wave 29 kilometres (18.0 mi) up the Petitcodiac River from Belliveau Village to Moncton to establish a new North American record for continuous surfing.[24]
