Sixteen pullets delivered to Sprite. One of the Black Sexlink had a bum leg so I threw in a Black Australorp to make it right.
Sprite's inventory system is very simple. She brings in a different color of bird every year when she reloads.
2021 she purchased Barred Rocks.
2022 she purchased ISA Brown chickens.
She keeps her birds for two years and she is able to sort the birds by age based on their color.
This year we cut a deal. I purchased Black Sexlink pullets and raised them with my meat bird so next year she will probably want Golden Comets or something not red, brown or black.
She has not done well with White Leghorns. They have very large combs and did not do well in Sprite's unheated hen-house.
She might try Buff Orphingtons (spelling?) I have done ok with them in Alaska!
ReplyDeleteWe started a flock of Bielefelder chickens about a year ago and are very impressed with their hardiness and prolific egg-laying. They survived -20 temps last winter in their portable coop. As layers they even have our Australorps beat.
ReplyDeleteThe wife has a couple black feathered ones... forget the spelling, coo coo maran? Very good at hiding when free ranging, nice eggs, very rich.
ReplyDeleteBringing in entirely different birds is an easy way to keep track. Also lets one easily gather data on successes/failures.
ReplyDeleteDid Sprite know, or did you award her "a Pullet-zerprize"?
