One of the fun things in real sword fighting, hack and slash type, is 'fake to the head, cut the legs.' Kinda hard to fight with one leg broken or slashed open.
Plus, well, people make the most interesting noises when you pound their upper thigh muscles into dog meat.
I was trying to figure out how to fit recoilless "punt guns" firing 2' lengths of chain or bouncing 2 pounds of nuts and bolts off the pavement in front of raging mobs of hostiles into the Seven Cows series but I was not successful.
I concur that gross trauma to the legs quickly takes the bad-guy out of the fight.
Don't know how that ended, but I learned a long time ago - never let someone control one of your legs in a fight.
