Fine Art Tuesday

Frits Thaulow born in Norway in 1847, died in 1906.

Famous for landscapes and for the number of paintings with streams and water in them.

It is baffling that so many structures in Europe were constructed in what appear to be the flood-plains of rivers.

I wonder if he took artistic liberty with the beech trees on the left of the picture. It would be unusual for them to grow so close to the water-table.

Hat-tip to Lucas for the artist featured today.

  1. Is it possible flood plains did not flood so badly hundreds of years ago before major land clearing & reshaping?

    1. Likely. But storm surges near the coast were still a thing and ice-dams were probably more likely than they are now.

  2. Flood plains: transport and power generation.
Usually fertile soil.....or so say ancient Egyptians, Sumerians, and Yellow River Han

  3. Lots of dams have been constructed in the last several hundred years making flooding less likely. Could the propinquity of building to water also be artistic license?
