Presented without (much) comment

I had one child who was totally incapacitated by the fact that the gear-shift on their mountain-bike was not perfectly synchronized with the arrow on the selector.

They melted down when the click of the detent on the selector did not instantly correlate with a change in the gear ratio.

The bike was otherwise totally functional and safe. They thought it was junk and worthless.

Some people grow out of that. Others get stuck that way for the rest of their lives.

  1. After a lifetime of cross-country biking I can say that the detents mean absolutely nothing . After about 25,000 miles they disappear and you learn to shift when demand demands it . Watch out for snakes under your sleeping bag in Mississippi though I would like to add .

    1. "...shift when demand demands it..."

Yep, that is how I read it. My legs tell me when to shift, not the number on the dial.

  2. There truly are defective people. In the past we allowed nature to cull them from the herd. Now we tax the bejeebers out of productive people to support these wastes of skin.

  3. "INTELLIGENCE IS THE ABILITY TO ACT TO CHANGE" ?

    Is that correct ?

Accepting New Reality is difficult for people who think that Life always has their back and is fair. No - its not. And how we deal with those changes will dictate how well we make out.

Flattened squirrels in the road are proof of this.

  5. I run across lots of people who meltdown over the simplest things.

    Unfortunately.

    1. And too often they demand the world conform to them and their neuroses.
