Lofts

Kubota wants a loft.

Belladonna is heading off to college.  They have lofts in dorms.  He is smitten with lofts.  He wants one.

The economics are staggering.  My brother the accountant once told me that a square foot of indoor space is worth $70.  He was discussing the economics of yard sales.  One either downsizes or one must up-size by moving...at a cost of $70/sq-ft.

A queen size mattress gobbles up about 34 square feet.  At $70/sq-ft, that noodles out to about $2300.  I know you don't believe me.  Figure it out yourself.  So far I have $90 into materials.

Today I was cutting, gluing and screwing together side frames for Kubota's loft.  I am using ample, beyond ample, amounts of wood as Kubota is somewhere north of 250 pounds and is, well, energetic.

Close up of end view.  Lower horizontal piece is a 2X6 piece of Douglas Fir.  5/4" decking will be deck-screwed to the bottom to form the slats.  The bottom of the mattress will be 55" above the floor.  The top of the mattress will be 30" from the ceiling.  The ceiling is an honest 95" above the floor.  The upper horizontal is a safety bar.
