José María Velasco (also known as José María Tranquilino Francisco de Jesús Velasco Gómez Obregón) was born in Mexico in the State of Mexico in 1840 and died in 1912.
Velasco was interested in science, and, as a student at the Academy of San Carlos studied zoology and botany at the nearby medical school; he also studied mathematics, geology, and surveying before becoming a student of painting.
His interest in geology and science is apparent in his sketches and some of his paintings which painstakingly detail the fractures in rock formations.
Many of the places he captured in paintings have since been swallowed up by the sprawl of Mexico City.
Gorgeous! Thanks for introducing me to this artist.
ReplyDeleteERJ, Mexican painters are a complete void in my knowledge. Thanks for sharing!
