The walls could use a little work, now.

Do I NEED 39 tomato plants and 11 banana pepper plants? No. But what does "need" have to do with anything?

One of the holes I dug in the Upper Orchard to plant fruit trees. The water table is 4" to 8" down...and that is on top of the hill.

I talked to the owner of The Property about some of the stacks of sheet-metal. He asked if I had a use for them. I am thinking about a chicken coop or a shed for the ducks. Seems a shame to have them just sit there and corrode.

  1. I had chickens for a while. It was a nice amusement for the dogs and the grandchildren but the price of chicken feed put the cost of eggs upside down for us and I got tired of chicken crap all over the place.

    1. Flat paint and diffuse lighting. It is how they hide wrinkles and crevices at Abie’s Bar.

  3. Fred in Texas, Actually you need more than 39 & 11... If you don't eat or preserve the produce you can donate it or sell it.
I'm not sure what the climate is like up there but we have discovered that sheet metal is only good for the roof of a coop and actually not as good as shingles. Our first coop was barn tin over wood framing. Sheet metal transfers heat to easily. It makes the coop too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. What we did for a couple of winters was line the coop with cardboard stapled to the studs for a dead air space insulation. It helped but building a coop out of sawmill lumber was better for the birds. Wood siding is the best for a coop. And set it up with lots of ventilation. As far as the feed goes, we let our chickens roam through the yard all day. But we have a 5' chain link fence. We haven't picked a tick off any of our dogs or cats in a couple of years. That's a benefit that is hard to put a value on. Also, the eggs are much higher quality than store eggs, unless you shell out premium money for premium eggs... The difference will be readily apparent the first time you make a lemon meringue pie with them.

  5. I believe that third picture was of the cell where Al Capone was incarcerated. He was allowed to "decorate" it.
