The goal for today was to plant 20 trees and the stretch-goal was 32.

Five apple trees and three pear trees at Southern Belle's |
The goal was 8 trees at Southern Belles + Twelve pear trees in the Hill Orchard.
 |
Twelve more apple trees in the Upper Orchard rounded out the Stretch-goal. The Goal and the "Stretch-goal" are getting closer together because I am getting a better handle on what I can do in a day as I gain experience. |
 |
Planting the trees includes armoring them against rabbit girdling and staking to reduce wind-whip. I failed to bring supplies to armor against the rabbit girdling. Improves, adapt, overcome. I had paper. I cut strips of plastic from the composted manure bags. |
Once I got rolling, I was planting one tree every eight minutes. It helped a lot that the holes were pre-dug. The fact that I was planting, staking and armoring three trees at-a-time slowed me down.
I am still in that stage of life where I expect a call something like "I need to have you pick up Kubota in Ortonville in 90 minutes". That means I do a little bit of work and then tie-it-off so I can walk away from it and it will not unravel.
I turned left out of the driveway at 10:15AM and turned left, back into it at 4:30PM. It has been a productive day.
I could use a week of days like that!
ReplyDeleteGood job, Joe. Wish I could keep up with that.--ken
ReplyDeleteIf memory serves, I am a little younger than you are.
DeleteI was not prepared for the year-to-year declines after 62. I can only imagine what the jump from 65 to 75 will hold.
I was not prepared for this decline either. I’ll be 70 in a few weeks. Just a few years ago, muscle aches would slow me down, but I did not have this daily fatigue. Muscle aches last far longer than they used to. No one told me old age would be like this. My small circle of friends reported similar slow-downs and weariness.

From what I am seeing in family and friends ageing seems to run in spurts. You get up feeling fine in the morning and by the end of the day you are much older due to injury that never gets entirely healed, stroke, heart attack, etc. And even minor injuries that happened years ago you forgot about can have effects that show up again and impair everyday activities. Gettin' old is hard and you are right about that 65 to 75 jump. It can be a tough time. ---ken
DeleteNow that is real entertainment.
