Fine Art? Tuesday

Link
This image is from a website called ArStation.com where various artists can post galleries of their work. The vast majority of the images appear to be generated by AI and there is a lot of fantasy and anime artwork.

If you find an image that you like, it is easy to explore other images the same artist posted. For example, if you click on the link below the top image, you can see other images posted by Michele Tanner by clicking on the "carrots" circled in red on the screen capture shoe

There is also a search function so you can search by topic. For example, if you typed "Rabbit" into the search function you would get everything from Japanese gun-bunnies to Easter bunnies to were-bunnies.

Is it "Fine Art"? Maybe not, but it can be a diversion if you have a few minutes to fill.

  1. I worry greatly about what will happen our arts and even sciences now that AI is a thing, and it's only going to grow. Exponentially. The toothpaste will not be going back into the tube.

  2. Ugh. Ya beat me to it. My daughter is a member of the gay-artiste clan and they’re totally up in arms and enraged about it. There is no question the machine does far, far better work.

  3. ERJ - You have touched on an interesting conundrum in modern "artistic" circles, the question of AI art and if it is art.

I have acquaintances that refuse to post or view AI art, but are have no problem with the idea of digital art. That has struck me as a bit odd, as the medium is the same - pixels. The difference, I suppose, is what generated it. Which brings up its own question: What is art? Is it just the medium? Is it the creator? Is it the medium plus the artist?

Certainly in the modern world, it can be argued that "art" lies in the eye of the beholder (full disclosure: I do not understand most modern art). But I do not think self-defined art is any more "art" just because its creator designates it so.

    1. "Art" is a personal thing, I like the picture and would not mind hanging it on a wall. In my mind, that makes it "art".
Unless I'm standing there watching someone paint it, or photograph it or hit the AI "print" button I'm not really going to know... That leaves me with the "I like it" test.

The world is getting to be a more interesting place every week it seems..
