Worth sharing

There were a lot of conversations over the course of opening day.

One short conversation that I thought was worth sharing was when Shotgun was coaching Handsome Hombre on the finer points of hunting.

"Don't look for the whole deer. It isn't like the movies or the TV shows. You might see the pink of a back-lit ear or the ficker of a tail. Maybe you will see a horizontal line in a field of vertical, dead golden rod or maybe a "stick" that is a bright ivory in a thicket of dark gray twigs."

"Same thing for bow-fishing" Shotgun digressed. "You don't look for the entire carp. You look for the edge of a fin circling in the water or a tiny swirl where there is no current. You will never see a fish if you are looking for the fish. You have to look for tiny bits of the fish."

  1. Shotgun is right on. Those things are what I tell young aspiring hunters, or older one that need to learn, and the same applies to rabbits and everything in between. --ken

  3. For me, using binoculars which are focus free have been an advantage when deer hunting. While focusing at specific range allows greater clarity, a lot of movements spotted in foreground and background are missed because they are out of focus.

Focus free won't make deer appear, but you find more animals you would have missed otherwise.
