I found a weak spot in our preps. We ran out of dog-treats.
It is possible that our enforced "in house" conditions may have increased the number of treats Zeus got. He manfully consumed the extra treats without complaint.

Inches of freezing rain predicted for the coming storm
It looks particularly bad for the band where freezing rain will exceed 1/2".
Power outages kill. Downed power lines kill. Carbon monoxide from improperly used generators kill. Hypothermia from furnaces that won't run without electricity kills. 1/2" of an inch of freezing rain is considered catastrophic and power outages are a near certainty.
Southern Arkansas is predicted to get over an inch of ice. So is a band from Atlanta, Georgia to Virginia's Dismal Swamp which includes the entire state of North Carolina.
Glare ice is almost impossible to walk on without crampons or without sprinkling some kind of grit on the surface. As a last resort you can vacuum your carpets and sprinkle the dust the vacuum collects on those surfaces you must walk on.
Snow can collapse roofs and is messy. If you have to drive in it then you can get stuck or have an accident. But it is the ice that is the big killer.

Checked generator this afternoon. Got kerosene, 15 gallons of gas. Plenty of flashlight batteries. Lamp oil and candles. Just have to hope I can find a couple of bags of rock salt tomorrow when I get back from Winston-Salem, NC. tomorrow afternoon.
ReplyDeleteWent to the grocery store for some fruit and a couple of steaks. As I was leaving, noticed at the Ace Hardware store, there was a line of about 20 or 25 people waiting to get propane tanks filled. The other Ace store had the same kind of line at their propane station this afternoon.
Now you're scaring me.

ReplyDeleteOne of my daughters lives in Aroostook County, ME right on the border with Canada. It's going to be so cold, they expect some trees to explode.
My other daughters live in the Hampton Roads area so they will be getting the same stuff we in the upstate of SC get.
Granddaughter in Minneapolis is expecting 17 below this weekend.
Prepare accordingly.

ReplyDeletePlease be careful with secondary heating like fireplaces, kerosene heaters and even those portable propane heaters.
Carbon monoxide as Joe mentioned. Having kids, pets or happenstance knock over something and get your home on fire is really bad. Fire Trucks and EMS have to deal with that ice and downed trees too.
I hate responding to a house on fire during a nor'easter. We cannot get there as fast as we like and the families are in trouble with the storm looking at their home burning.

You can get a CO detector for as little as $20+/-
Failure to be smart is what kills people.
Like Michael said, the other more primitive hating devices require more care and intelligence . So do generators.

Good luck, chaps - at least you're used to it. The equivalent in Britain would stop the whole country - we've not had a bad winter since 1963.
We went through a bad ice storm in ‘08. 2 weeks without power. Many people really had troubles. A friend told of waiting in the parking lot of a store with dozens of other people, waiting for the shipment of generators to show up.

If you’re not a golfer go to a second hand store and buy some golf shoes, or a new, cheap pair. Leave a pair in your car, and a pair in the house. A pair left in the trunk after a summer of golfing “saved” us when we came home from work, and due to the ice in our driveway and the uphill angle to our house, we could not navigate up to it. We were about to try crawling on all fours when the light bulb went off in our brain😁. I went first, then threw the shoes back to my spouse.
