The Frozen Thames painted 1677 |
He was one of the painters during the Dutch Golden Age.
Notable for providing graphic evidence that southeastern Britain was cold enough, for long enough of a period to ice over heavily enough on the Thames to support traffic and that it happened on a yearly basis. Doubly amazing when you consider this region of the Thames was far enough downstream to still experience tides.
This was during the Maunder Minimum (sun activity) during the Little Ice Age.

Frost Fair on the Frozen Thames painted in 1684 |
The Thames was at that time a lot broader and presumably shallower, so the flow rate would have been much lower. That does make it more likely to freeze. Still, it must have been noticeably colder at that time.
ReplyDelete1962, I think, is most recent freezing over of the lower Thames. The upper Thames freezes over more often.
DeleteWhat happened to the crops and population during that little ice age?

DeleteIt is difficult to get hard numbers. The population of Ireland was ESTIMATED to have dropped by 20%
There was dearth and famine in Scotland. The time was referred to as "King William's ill years."
DeleteERJ - Having seen sunrises like that, I can feel the cold in my breath.
ReplyDeleteThanks, as always, for continuing the tradition.
Maunder Minimum and Little Ice Age documented as much colder than later Victorian times, so - significant "Global Warming" long before the advent of mass industrialization, could there be a lesson there for the supporters of the AGW climate cult, that the earth can and has frequently changed temperature before the advent of significant CO2 emissions from human activity?
ReplyDeleteAnd, of course, the Mediaeval Warm Period around 5-600 years earlier when temperatures were high enough to allow agriculture on Greenland, something that it's not yet warm enough for today....
Each of those paintings are quite nice.
ReplyDeleteSeveral have some seemingly unusual behavior. The first, a man shooting fowl while amongst the crowd. I chuckled. The painting of dogs attacking the bear has dogs on a chase in the background.
The 3rd from the top has the nobleman a bit larger than the others. This is an old style to signify the importance of that one.
1883 was the year of the huge Krakatoa eruption. One result was the Thames froze deeply.
