Southern Belle likes to run a tight ship with all of the brass shining. She was going to wipe out the sprawling, thorny bushes near the edge of the patio but I recognized them as gooseberries.
I asked her to give them another year before she decided to nuke them.

Awesome pie
Intense flavor. Perfect ratio of crust to filling. Every bite just seemed to get better.
I have not added any of those to the homestead, but I may reconsider. I can't get currants to grow for the life of me! Too hot!
ReplyDeleteRegarding currants: Check out Ribes odoratum "Crandell". It is sometimes called "Buffalo Currant" because its native range coincided with that of American Bison. Check out its native range.
DeleteRegarding gooseberries, IIRC Poorman originated in Utah and Pixwell in South Dakota. Both places have the potential to hit 110F.
I envy you that pie. My Nana used to make a spectacular gooseberry and raspberry crumble served with custard. To die for.
ReplyDeletePixwell and Glendale are probably two of the most heat-tolerant gooseberry varieties, but both will probably prefer shading from intense afternoon sun. Pixwell is mediocre at best - but will handle heat; glendale fruit quality is supposedly much better.
