I helped somebody move from their third-floor apartment yesterday. He has tomorrow off, so we will hit it hard again. After that I lugged water for trees in the Hill Orchard and then went to the Eaton County Fair.
The day before that I was filling pot-holes in a 1/4 mile long driveway with a yard of crushed concrete and will probably another yard to finish the job.
For some reason I am tired and my muscles ache today.
It must be old-age.

Has anybody had any luck with making a Figure-8 out of straps and cradling them underneath the mattress like this? At least we could have something to grip an wrap around our forearms. |
Does anybody have any tips for moving oversized box springs and huge, floppy mattresses. And before you ask, I know to empty the water out of water-bed mattresses....and this isn't a water-bed.
Worth repeating
New guy shows up and is handed a stick of dynamite with a lighted fuse.
New guy totally rocks, he exceeds all expectations.
Yes, I've used strapping to move mattresses. It works. But the way we did it was a long loopy sling for each man. Hands through and pressing against the mattress, sling over the back of the wrists and both runs of the loopy under the end of the mattress. Make sure it's far enough in that the sling doesn't slide off the end of the mattress. We made our loopy slings out of the webbing that lumber companies use to strap bundles of wood for delivery to the building site. Use the wide webbing if you can get it. The narrow webbing cuts into your skin. We tied the ends together with a 'water knot' or a 'ring bend'. I use that loopy sling to carry firewood in during the winter. And to drag brush when I'm clearing ground. Girth hitch around several butt ends and drag by hand or with a riding mower. Loopy slings are really handy.
ReplyDeleteI find that nothing really helps with big floppy mattresses. I've tried straps, bags, and a couple other things.

This might be an idea using duct tape or packing tape: https://www.housedigest.com/1890774/tape-corner-hack-move-mattress/
ReplyDeleteSounds like you're working your tail off in addition to the already hard work on the farm. Take care not to overdo it and injure yourself.
It is a little late for that. I am getting tendonitis on the insides of my elbows, which seems like a weird place.
DeleteThe upside is that The New World Order is unlikely to harvest me for spare parts.
I think tendonitis on the inside of the elbow is called "golfer's elbow", and "tennis elbow" if it's on the outside of the elbow. Wife had one, I had the other and neither of us play, but we were doing yardwork...
DeleteAmazon has mattress movers - some designs are total bags with added straps, there is at least one with the strap as you show but with shoulder padding. https://www.amazon.com/JCHL-2-Person-Adjustable-Shoulder-Furniture/dp/B07CKTL6WC/ref=sr_1_9?sr=8-9
ReplyDeleteConcur with Tweell. Those work!
ReplyDeletetwo ratchet straps and two fork handles or something similar. Put a clove hitch a foot from each end of the pole. Lift at the same time.
ReplyDeleteI never thought about that! That's a good idea. Might be hard to navigate stairwells, but nothing goes up and around a staircase easy...
DeleteDamnfool old codger! Slow down! You're making the rest of us look bad.
