Jobs dominated by Hispanics

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Before I get into hot-water, I post this information because it seems plausible that illegal aliens from Latin America are more likely to go into jobs where there are already a large number of legal employees of Hispanic heritage.

Locally, construction trades are paying $15-to-$20 an hour and there is ample over-time if one has the stamina to work it.

The fields dominated by Hispanic women don't pay quite so well.

For the most part, the contention that Hispanics work marginal jobs and drag down wages seems shaky at best. My impression is they work jobs that are physically demanding and work their asses off. Not too many soy-boys wanting to lug buckets of "mud" around the job site or sand drywall.

My opinion and worth exactly what you paid for it.

Fake News Friday: Whitmer determines that sex spreads Covid

Governor Whitmer determined that sexual congress spreads Covid and signed an Executive Order outlawing sex between human beings.

When asked to explain the "science" behind her stunning finding, the Governor pointed out that Sexually Transmitted Diseases have gone up significantly since March, 2020. Additionally, since everybody has been socially distancing and wearing masks, it MUST be sex that is spreading it.

And Just-Like-That, senior citizens are fighting to get into the nursing homes that experienced the highest fatality rates. Who knew?

Remnant: Does a bear know how to shit in the woods?

“A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.”  General George Patton

Willie pulled out his battered flip-phone and started punching in Lena’s number from memory.

Lena asked about the sounds of all the shooting and Willie explained with an economy of words. Then he said “I wanna borrow your egg sign and a coupla your chickens.”

Lena asked why and Willie explained.

Lena was willing to make the loans but it came with a few conditions. That is how Lena ended up in the ambush party.

The pickings for kill-sacks were limited, especially the ones between M-99 and the Sudak farm. The only decent choice was a half-mile east of the Sudak farm. It had no elevation advantage but the long drive was tightly bracketed by impenetrable willow and dogwood brush and it curved in a snake-like fashion several times before it reached the buildings.

Lena threw four chickens in one feed sack and four chunks of firewood in another. Willie pulled her sign off the post.

Willie attached it to the mailbox at the end of the drive with zip-ties.

Lena greeted Owen and Dar and commenced to staking out her girls. She tied lengths of monofilament fishing line to each chunk of firewood and then tied the other end to one leg of her chickens.

Then she pulled out her 20 gauge pump shotgun and asked Dar where he wanted her to set-up.

*

Jarrell drove the meat to town. He had well over 2000 pounds of meat. Not only had they carved the carcasses up into “chunks”, Dar had Jarrell scavenge the gut piles for hearts, livers, kidneys, lungs and fat. “They can grind it into the hamburger. Folks are hungry. They will be happy to get it.”

*

Having done what he could to salvage the situation in his own domaine, Mayor Wagnor started calling his fellow mayors to bring them up to speed.

He was more than a little bit pissed to learn that they already knew but had not bothered to share the info with him.

Charlotte, Potterville and Olivet are all on I-69 and had all been hit by raiders. Not just the outlying areas, the towns themselves.

Mayor Wagner did not spare Charlotte’s mayor the sharp edge of his tongue.

Mayor Gentes said “I don’t know why you are so upset. It is only property.”

That is when Mayor Wagner lost it.

“Only property! Only property!!!” he boomed over the phone.

Poor Mayor Gentes was forty years Wagner’s junior. Even though Charlotte was twice as big as Eaton Rapids, personality matters. Size of the fight in the dog, and all that.

“That only makes sense if you can replace that property” Wagner snarled.

“You swore an oath to protect the people of Charlotte and to uphold the law. By my lights you fucked up and failed both. Big time” Wagner said.

On the other end of the phone, Gentes withered. He saw being mayor as a resume enhancement. He had not signed on to make tough decisions. And now Wagner was jamming it up his backside.

“What would you have me do?” Gentes said.

“What would you tell the police to do if they were home intruders stealing things?” Wagner asked.

“But they have papers” Gentes defended himself.

Wagner shook his head. “Will that paper feed your babies when they are hungry? How do you know those papers are legit? Did you get a roll-out? Did anybody send you emails or certified letters? But even if they did, it is still ‘loss of property without due process’.”

“That paper isn’t fit to wipe your ass with.”

After making the round-robin of calls, Wagner realized he should have been preparing Eaton Rapids for defense.

Fortunately, there were still the remnants of the motley crew Dar had mustered.

Mayor informed the Gary Weber, man who seemed to be the leader, that the Cities of Charlotte and Potterville had already been raided. Wagner speculated that Eaton Rapids had been spared since it was not on a limited access road and raiders had been distracted by closer targets like Twin Pine ranch but that their luck would not hold.

That is when Jarrell pulled into town with his load of meat.

As he got out of the truck and slung “his” rifle over his shoulder, Gary tapped Jarrell’s shoulder. “Come with me. Dar texted me. Said you are a good man when the chips are down.”

Gary didn’t have a lot of resources to spread around. Eaton Rapids’ most valuable resource was the grocery store with the dough mixing equipment and the “rising” room but the submarine sandwich place was the closest target, being right downtown. The other two potential targets, Elsie’s pizza and the other pizza place were across the street from each other.

Gary’s fundamental problem was how to position defenders and avoid blue-on-blue or collateral casualties. Raiders might not be concerned about civilian casualties but Gary and the Mayor sure did.

Gary sent Jarrell to the Red Ribbon Hall. The RRH had been the home of the not-so-secret Order of the Eastern Star and was now it own, stand-alone entity.

Flat roofed, fifty feet high, masonry building with a parapet around it. It was not directly across from the sub-sandwich building but some hundred yards north of it and across the street. The biggest advantages were its height and the fact that ricochets and misses would fly out over the river rather than into neighborhoods.

It was also the most northern of the town's defense. It was the closest to Lansing and would have both first and last crack at any raiders.

Weber hoped they would not be called into play.

Jarrell was just getting settled in when another head popped out of the roof access.

It was Melody.

“Come to keep me company?” he asked.

Then he saw the AR-15 she was carrying. There was nothing tacti-cool about it. A simple optic sight appeared to be the only option on it. Melody was wearing a vest and had six magazines stashed in pockets.

“Do you know how to shoot that thing”? Jarrell asked.

Melody gave him a saucy smile and answered “Does a bear know how to shit in the woods?”

Follow-up on "Five Actions" post

"You didn't address the problem of illegal immigration, which has a negative effect on government-managed humanitarian aid programs and all labor, union and non-union."  From Aggie's comment in Five Actions post

It is not uncommon for various appendages of the vast, Federal government to be working at cross-purposes with each other.

A prime example is that "safe" vehicles have features that reduce their fuel economy and features that increase fuel economy increase pollution.

The laws surrounding immigration from Latin America are irrational because our politicians want to have their cake and eat it too.

My personal  belief is that we need, and will continue to need, robust immigration from Latin America. Otherwise, we will depend on robots to change our poopy Depends when we are ninety.

In a rational world, illegals would be drop-kicked out of the US and the laws would be dynamically relaxed until the numbers coming in matched the anticipated needs of the economy.

Unfortunately, we have laws on the books but the vast bureaucracy refuses to use them.

Case in point. I know a woman who was sexually assaulted by an illegal immigrant. The young woman agreed to testify. The attorney for the illegal immigrant kept cancelling the court date when the young woman showed up. Finally, he copped a plea for a sexual assault charge that was a misdemeanor.

The kicker is that this was the fourth time he had been nailed for sexual assault. Given the difficulty in pinning him down, how many other women did he assault? The judge did not turn him over to Federal authorities for deportation. And how many more will he assault?

So, in Joe's perfect world we would enforce the laws on the books the way they were written but we would also write the laws so they capture what we truly intend and are laws that are economically advantageous to those of us who are already here.

Labor

It is interesting that Aggie brought up Labor as an issue.

Some academics contend that compulsory education was implemented to artificially reduce the labor force and keep wages high. You could even say the entire "go to college" thing is about keeping workers off the market and reducing wages.

But on the other hand, we still want a screaming-deal on getting our lawns mowed, our foundations poured, houses re-roofed, broadband internet installed and a thousand other menial tasks.

One way to meet these conflicting criteria is to have a visible labor force (which gets paid well and votes) and an invisible labor force.

Unions

In theory I do not like Unions but in practice they have treated me well.

Even though I was "management" most of my bosses used the same due-process standards we were contractually obliged to offer union represented employees.

In an economy with some employees represented by unions and others not represented, the employees represented by unions tend to congregate in industries with pricing power and accumulate a larger share of the net product than non-union employees. Since unions, as such, do not increase productivity, it means that the non-union employees subsidize the union employees compared to a union-free environment.

From a more micro viewpoint, the increased wages of union employees increases the break-even economics for automation and other productivity strategies. Operations that were marginally viable to automate at $12/hr become a slam-dunk at $18/hr. So, unions indirectly increase productivity because more is invested in automation resulting in fewer employees producing the same or more volume.

I once had a union-represented employee who was very pro-union. His family owned a bar in the small town he hailed from.

I asked him "So, when you retire and take over the business, are you going to help your employees get unionized?"

His response was "You have to be fucking nuts!"

He would not be able to compete with the other bar in town. Or, "Union for me but not for thee."

That reinforces the contention that organized labor is a zero-sum game for the over-all economy. It does not create wealth but tilts the table, favoring one group at the expense of others.

Summary

I am not sure this addresses Aggie's question but I gave it a shot.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?   -Ezekiel 14:21 KJV translation

I want to pause here for a minute and explain one of my basic beliefs about how societal collapse unfolds. That way, there will not be data-dumps in the Remnant story and the action can move along more quickly.

The Four Horsemen ride together

I think it is a common belief that the four horsemen (war, famine, pestilence and death) are an "or" proposition. I disagree. Historically they have have ridden together: War and famine and pestilence and death. The occurrence of one horsemen brings the others.

Let me paint a quick word picture of how this could happen. Since weaknesses are easier to see in others, I will make this story happen somewhere other than the USA.

Achmed is a simple farmer in the Tigris-Euphrates valley like his father and grandfathers before him. He has enough land to feed his family with some left over to sell to the market for necessities and a few luxuries.

One of those luxuries is to go to the local village once a week and share a water-pipe and gossip with the locals.

War, which is never far from the land, breaks out.

Achmed hears about it at the hooka lounge and he buries the family silver and jewels.

The battles come closer to Achmed's farm. He locks up his animals rather than letting them graze on crop-waste and forage for their own needs. That means that some of the grain he would have taken to market for city-dwellers to eat is now going to his animals.

Achmed's next door neighbor is shot in his field and his family ravaged. Bullets whistle by Achmed but he is able to get to the house, shutter the windows and send a few rounds from the family, heirloom SKS back in the direction of the attackers.

After that, Achmed spends the absolute, bare-ass minimum amount of time in his field. The crops do not get irrigated and the crops wither. At harvest, Achmed only goes out to his fields when rumors confirm the rebels are not in the area. Achmed's crop will be 20% of what he usually harvests. There will be nothing to sell. There is not enough to last for the year.

Prices are high and Achmed decides to sell his entire crop and move his family to the city. He heard there were "programs" in the city where food was handed out.

Achmed's family soon learns that those programs either don't exist or are controlled by a religious faction that hates Achmed's preferred expression of religion. The little food they find is moldy and of very low calorie content.

Achmed deeply regretted leaving the land. Prices in the city were astronomical. He had no way to get back to the farm where he could have foraged for greens and gleaned for grain, where he had neighbors who were of his sect. Rumors were that the rebel army had taken over his village

Crammed in a refugee camp, there is no water for washing or sewage. With no water to flush toilets, people relieve themselves outside. The feces dries and is ground to dust as people walk over it. The dust blows everywhere.

Achmed's oldest son gets a scratch on his leg which becomes infected. He first loses his leg and then his life.

Then Achmed's youngest son dies of dysentery from the terrible food and his wife dies in child-birth. Achmed and Achmed's middle son join a group of rebels who attack the richest enclaves in the city.

They have nothing to lose.

The story is cyclic

The story cycles. You can start telling this story at famine or pestilence or any stage and complete the cycle. Once started it can be endless. It is cyclic and self-perpetuating.

One horsemen calls the other three.

Five actions to address "systemic racism"

One of my brothers challenged me regarding "systemic racism".

"If systemic racism is not the reason for inner-city ills, then what are the reasons and more important, how would you fix them? Give me five actions."

In no particular order:

End compulsory education

End compulsory education beyond some point....perhaps seventh grade. In many inner-cities students enter ninth grade with a higher reading ability than when they leave high school.

Compulsory education is not working. Compulsory education sends the message that "No matter how egregiously you fail we will continue to drag you down the field. Your failure is not your fault."

The current system fosters the same bad behaviors seen in abusive men who know their wives must take them back. The kids who want to learn suffer. Valedictorians of large inner-city high schools have to take remedial classes as college freshmen. They have been failed.

"What would I replace it with?" Nothing. If they change their mind they can go to the local community college.

Incidentally, these action items should be applied everywhere, not just inner-cities.

Remove anti-marriage incentives

We are have been so concerned about destroying women's self-esteem that we have destroyed, at this point, three generations of men in the inner city.

"But they will starve?" The women or the kids? It can be phased in where all kids currently alive get welfare but ones born after some date do not. If they chose to have kids it is on them.

Incentivize sterilization

OK, this will get me in hot-water with the Catholic Church. But one tenant of brainstorming is to throw everything on the table. Those ideas may be deeply flawed but they can serve as stepping-stones to much better solutions.

The third time a woman gets an abortion she is told it will be free if she also gets her tubes tied. Otherwise, it costs some amount of cash-out-of-pocket. Each subsequent abortion is the same deal but the cash portion increases.

If they have a child/fetus who shows symptoms of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, they get a mandatory sterilization.

Symptoms and consequences of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and subclinical FAS (source)

  • Poor coordination or balance
  • Intellectual disability, learning disorders and delayed development
  • Poor memory
  • Trouble with attention and with processing information
  • Difficulty with reasoning and problem-solving
  • Difficulty identifying consequences of choices
  • Poor judgment skills
  • Jitteriness or hyperactivity
  • Rapidly changing moods
  • Difficulty in school
  • Trouble getting along with others
  • Poor social skills
  • Trouble adapting to change or switching from one task to another
  • Problems with behavior and impulse control
  • Poor concept of time
  • Problems staying on task
  • Difficulty planning or working toward a goal

So, how does that list of characteristics line up with the behaviors of a few who make life miserable for all?

If the aborted fetus shows traces of illegal drugs, the mother gets a mandatory sterilization.

Rap music

Remove Federal protections, contracts and subsidies to corporations that profit from the distribution of Rap music.

"Artists" can still create Rap music. Corporations can still distribute it if they divest all Federal business. No problem.

University

It breaks my heart to see large numbers of black people, especially women, go to university and graduate with majors that provide no economic return on their investment of time and money.

Since many of these students are first-generation college students, they have nobody to explain the fact-of-life as they relate to college educations.

Universities should be held as accountable as credit card companies. They should be forced to present students with data-driven income estimates of new graduates.

Furthermore, it should be "normalized" against the average wages of a non-college graduate and the number of years required for the student to show a net-gain vs. that non-college graduate. Be sure to tack on the student loan interest when making the calculations and the four (or five) years of wages that were lost when the student was at the University.

To prevent "gaming" the numbers, every student who graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Forensic Psychology (to give an example) must be included in the calculations. If they are a null data point, i.e. they don't report, the value of zero must be used in the calculations.

Too many colleges cook the numbers by reporting only the graduates who get jobs. That is misleading if 80% of the graduates cannot get a job or are too embarrassed to report their earnings as a dishwasher.

For me and my house, we support DIVERSITY

Five head-stamps, two brands of primers.

Federal, Remington-Peters, Hornady, CBC (probably Brazil) and PPU (Serbia). Mix of Winchester Small Pistol and CCI Small Pistol.

Food

This is to assure Mrs ERJ that we are eating healthy. See the green things on the nachos?

I also had a barley-sprout smoothie...sort of.

Mrs ERJ's Sugar Snap Peas are up

The rabbits have already volunteered to thin them. I put up fence to slow them down.

Mrs ERJ's salad garden

The second flight of super sugar snap peas is planted and so is the first flight of green onions. I don't need to fence until the peas break the ground.

Mrs ERJ and I have different visions of what we expect from a garden.

I want calories, preferably ones that are easy to store.

Mrs ERJ wants vitamin-dense salad greens.

It made sense to give her 100 square-feet to do her thing.

In previous years, I fenced off a 10'-by-10' square with a two-foot wide path around it for access.

This year she is getting a 5'-by-25' rectangle with a two-foot wide path around the perimeter.

The advantage of a long, narrow garden is that it is easier to see produce that is ready to pick. Then, it is one step, at most, to reach out and pick it.

Sixty feet west of her garden are a row of pecan trees that are roughly 40' tall, so she will get shade from the west. We will put 25' of feedlot panel on the west side of her plot for pole beans, sugar snap peas, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and other climbing "salad" truck.

For most things, I avoid novelty colors but there is much to be said for vegetables that can be easily seen against the green foliage: purple pole beans, white-skinned cukes, yellow zucchini.

Amprolium

Those of you who have never raised farm animals can tune out.

The amprolium for the intestinal parasite showed up in the mail today.

The label indicates that I should put 4 ounces of 20% amprolium powder in 50 gallons of water to control an outbreak of coccocidia.

Given average water intake and typical feed composition, cattle will usually drink enough water to get a therapeutic dose of amprolium.

Except when the high temperature is 40F and they are eating lush, green pasture.

So, I had this idea. I would put 2 grams of amprolium (10 grams of 20%) into a bottle of milk replacer and make sure that my one problem-child got a whacking good dose right at the beginning.

What could go wrong.

The only calf in the paddock who was not interested in the bottle was Millie, my problem-child.

The other, 400 pound calves were chasing me around.

Have you ever noticed how some men drink at the bar with one foot hoisted up on the rail while other men drink with both feet firmly planted on the ground?

Calves are the same way. One of the steer-calves believes that the top of my shoe is the equivalent of a brass, bar-rail. Have you ever tried to extricate yourself when you have 250 pounds of calf (calves are front heavy) pinning your running shoe to the ground?

Picture in your head me trying to entice Miss Hard-to-get with the bottle as the other three are butting me in the ass and trying to stand on my foot. Now picture me dancing around the paddock with one foot not working so great.

Farmers are like boaters. The two best days in his life are the day.....

So, Mrs ERJ, if you happen to be reading this SNAFU.
