Reconfiguring the E.R. orchard to make it easier to maintain

As I hammer the Eaton Rapids back into shape, it occurred to me that I need to get rid of the rows of grape vines between the fruit trees. The vines make it hard to use automation. They make it hard to maintain the orchard floor.

I liked the idea of grape vines more than the actual fact. I liked growing them but don't have time to use the fruit to make wine. Additionally, we are not big users of sweet products like jams and jellies. I no longer have time for the additional demands on my time.

So...they gotta go. I will probably not remove the trellis for a while. Maybe somebody will come along who will be all excited about wine grapes.

Rows

At various times in my life I have been told that "Math is racist" and "White men didn't invent anything".

The two statements contradict each other to some degree. Nearly all inventions involve the use of geometry and calculations and statistics-based testing.

The "Math is racist" screed goes to extremes. There were claims that "White men plant seeds in rows and that proves they are pathologically driven to control nature."

As a simple point of fact, planting in rows makes it easier to nurture and care for plants. Planting seeds within the row at exact intervals gives each plant the same resources to grow. Planting in rows and making fields rectangular or on a contour means more food which means fewer hungry people.

I think both statements "Math is racist" and "White men didn't invent anything" are frantic attempts to win an argument at any cost.

Some people become so enraged when arguing that the don't stop and ask themselves "Is this worth arguing about? Is it worth burning down the house?"

"...aspire to live a tranquil life, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your [own] hands, as we instructed you, that you may conduct yourselves properly toward outsiders and not depend on anyone."   1 Thessalonians 4:11,12

  1. You're a smart guy, Joe. Math is racist is a dog whistle, you know that. Besides, I heard it was the Egyptians that invented math in Wakanda?
Seriously, anytime that word appears in an argument, the speaker has thrown in the towel.

  2. When we bought our house we ripped out two grape vines, the biggest of which was cunningly sited so that when the grapes most need time in the sun to ripen in autumn, the vine was in shade nearly all day. The other one simply got iunderfoot in the kitchen garden.

Alas we also had to rip out a row of pears - cankered, the lot of them. Then a couple of plums and a greengage had to go. Not at all what we had hoped for but needs must.

  4. Planting in rows- Back before corn heads that shear off everything in the path, a gentleman of India subcontinent descent asked my boss to come harvest his field. Observing the field to make a game plan, which way do the rows lie?
He had planted the 10 acre field by hand. Broadcasting.
We declined to continue the arrangement

  5. We have wild grapes around here that are invasive. They tangle around everything. Mostly a pain to deal with if you need to clear out trees or brush. And they keep growing back if you just cut them back.
Some people do manage to harvest the grapes for jam, if we’re having a good year for the fruit.

  6. Pest control guy I do a lot of business with gave me a spray can that both froze the hornets coming out of the nest and poisened the paper/cellulose nest. As the nest grows they remove from the inside and past on the outside. When they hit the poisened layer they die. Nest gone. Roger

  7. Other musings. What makes a nest irresistable as a target for a rock, to a boy? And, down south, yellow jackets live in the ground, bite and sting. Shorter than hornets. Hornets and yellow jackets are different. Hornets warn you. Yellow jackets ambush you. Hence the advice to put a pint of fuel down the hole at night. Roger

    1. For yellow jackets, I take a 10ft length of conduit and place one end at the opening to the nest. Come nightfall, amble out to the other end of the conduit with a transmission funnel and a vinegar sausage can filled with gas. Insert funnel and raise to knee level, and slowly pour gas into funnel so it doesn't overshoot the nest. Come back in the morning and verify no activity. Why yes, I am allergic...
