Notes to self...

Pawpaw is a blogger in Central Louisiana and he is my "Blogging Godfather".

He advised me to publish something every day and to use my blog to record things I wanted to remember.

Note #1 Phenology cues for when to plant tomatoes

Black Locust just started blooming (470 Growing Degree Days, base 50) and I just planted the tomato plants, validating that it may be a good Phenology marker. Picking markers is an art. There are some plants that have such a long bloom period that they don't provide a good, crisp signal. Nannyberry (Viburnum lentago) is one such plant. While it is showy (and thus easy to see) and very wide-spread, the stupid plant has conspicuous blossoms for two weeks. Black Locust is also wide-spread and showy but the proper time to plant tomatoes closely coincides with the beginning of the bloom...which doesn't last that long, anyway.

Note #2 Iconic "Classical Music"

  • JS Bach, Tocatta and Fugue in D minor, Brandenburg concertos
  • Camille St Saens 2nd Piano concerto in G minor and 3rd Symphony in C minor
  • Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker and "1812" symphonies
  • Dvorak's New World Symphony
  • Beethoven 9th and 6th Symphonies
  • Sibelius Andante Festivo
  • Albinoni Adagio in G Minor
  • Pachelbel's Canon
  • Schubert's Ave Maria (violin version)
  • Juaquin Rodrigo Adagio Concierto De Aranjuez
  • (Please feel free to add to the list)
