A dead deer in the Upper Orchard. Maybe a couple of weeks old.Another dead deer. This one in the Hill Orchard. No evidence of an archery wound. The other deer was too-far gone to even look for evidence wounds from a hunter.
Dating corpses is an art and ambient temperatures make a huge difference. My Wild Azz Guess is that this deer has been dead for four days. Extremely bloated. Prolapsing rectum. Rectum? Heck, it killed 'im.
In total, the Upper and Hill Orchards are about an acre. Two dead deer in a single acre doesn't mean EHD is in Eaton County but it doesn't bode well for the 2026 hunting season.
Word on the street is that Jackson and Calhoun Counties, both of them directly south of Eaton County, have been hammered by EHD.

ReplyDeleteI dip the tips of my Gold Dot, .10mm magnum hollowpoints in Windex to disrupt their CSN.
DeleteFive or six hits to the CSN with 180 grain hollowpoints dipped in Windex generally incentivizes them to change their priorities.
CSN? Explain please; tried looking it up and probably sure it isn't Crosby Stills & Nash, or Certified Surgery Nurse, etc.
DeleteLyzdexic for CNS. Sorry, dyslexic for CNS, Central Nervous System.
DeleteTime for another glass of mur.
Paddle the grand river and then you will know. The creek running through our swamp and back 40 pond was littered with corpses in mid Sept. The scale and stench of the deer die off was unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteJackson County here…I have seven trail cams covering 30 acres of our 60 acre parcel. Have gotten pics of ONE small buck and ONE doe/fawn pair since then.
In prior years pics would number in the dozens daily. The herd has collapsed locally.
This makes getting emergency water from surface water very difficult.
ReplyDeleteHistorically polluted water was a battle tactic.
Deer populations in many regions are being decimated by disease. Dealing with it is a serious challenge.
ReplyDeleteChronic wasting disease. The nations deer supply is infected with. Some more than others. Supposed point zero was a group doing deer research put some deer in a sheep pen and the released the deer to the wild after the research ended. They had a disease that affects sheep. Now in the wild and no known fix. Sine the reaserch group is not named I would bet it was some DNR group. Cuts deer down to three years total life.
